This patch of yellow iris has been thriving in a shady area just near the edge of a spring fed creek on our place near the Nueces river for many years. The blooms are always a welcome harbinger of springtime and the monarch butterfly on the top bloom was happy to find them.

Male summer tanagers are beautiful birds to see and hear. They are one of the first birds to arrive in spring and last to leave for winter at our property. I sometimes hear the song before I see one of the birds. The females are duller, more of a yellow-olive green combination.

I'm still not completely sure that I have made a correct ID on this one, but another birder has given me some tips to help me pin it down. Anyway, it was the first and only time I saw this bird and to my knowledge the first time I have seen this species. It posed nicely on some rusted barbed wire. In Montell, Uvalde County, during September 2018.

A striking bird with a bold black-and-white patter above and a bright yellow-gold throat patch. Typical of warblers they tend to forage for insects and spiders along the trunks of trees or among the leaves. I have also seen them gleaning insects from the window screens or visiting the suet feeders in my yard. They also enjoy a splash in the bird bath or water sprinkler.

This male summer tanager was perched in the shadows with just a bit of sunlight creating a soft glowing effect on his beautiful ref feathers. The birds return each spring to nest, raise their young and brighten up the place throughout the summer. They have a lovely song and sing pretty much all the time.

Not sure of the species of insect. I would guess it is a type of beetle. Pretty orange color against the purple of a thistle flower. I believe it is Texas star thistle, sometimes called a basket-flower. In Montell, Uvalde County, Texas.
More shots of this beautiful little bird that graced my yard with his presence for a few days in April 2022. The metallic orange plumage is spectacular with splashes of white and black. His gorget (throat patch) looks black or maroon or glowing-orange depending on how his feathers are flexed and how the light hits them. He picked a favorite feeder in the yard and guarded it ferociously from any other hummingbirds who thought to make use of it.

In my opinion, the common grackle is not very common looking. The iridescent feathers give this blackbird hues of blue, green, purple and bronze. Other than that, they are generally nuisance birds that tend to take over bird feeders, parking lots, parks and any other space where they might find easy food. This one was seen in Dallas, Texas, in my sister's backyard.
A pretty shrub with yellow flowers, some type of senna. We have a similar plant that is native to our region in SW Texas.

I bought a tickseed flower to plant in the garden, before putting it in the ground I noticed this among the leaves. I don't know if it's a dead tickseed blossom or if it belongs to something else that fell there at the plant nursery.
Any ideas?
I think this is a bee mimic of some type, but it could actually be a bee that I am not familiar with. Anyway it seemed to be just hanging around on this wispy stem.

This tiny bird, I find easier to find and identify by it's squeaky, buzzy calls. Very small, very fast and I worked hard to get for usable shots of this one. In Montell, Uvalde County, Texas.
This brilliant fellow has a sad tale. I watched as he skimmed around above a small pool of water near the Nueces River on our property. He appeared to be courting a female and the pair flew together and perched several times but I could never get a shot of both. Suddenly a fish leaped up, grabbed the female and disappeared into the water. The poor male seemed to be looking for her for a while before clinging to a twig all alone. Unfortunately I did not see any others that day. This was the first time to see this species on our place.

The male of this species is a colorful mix of red, blue, yellow and green while the female and immature birds are green above with yellow/green below. They spend summers at our place and come into my yard for water and seeds. They seem to prefer choosing seeds directly off the plant rather than getting them from my bird feeders.
