Handsome male seeming to give me the side-eye look. These are not my favorite birds because I know some of the local nesting songbirds, including some endangered or threatened species, will lose some or all of their own eggs/hatchlings due to the nature of these birds. The females will lay their eggs in nests of other species to be cared for by the owner of the nest.

This little bird took a flying leap from the tray feeder in my yard. The light was not the best but it made for an interesting look with the trees in the background.

I was out yesterday trying to photograph the elusive Orange Tip butterfly, when, from under my feet shot 6 or 7 baby Pheasants. I took a single image and high-tailed it out of there to avoid further disturbance. They so are incredibly cute.

You will likely get sick of all of the butterfly photos that I'll be posting. There were so many that I couldn't stop myself! Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Summer is finally/properly here.

One of my favorite of the Texas wildflowers. They have a long blooming season and add a bright pop of color to the scenery.

This photo reminded me of a recent visit with my granddaughter. She is three and learning how she can communicate with her eyes (winks, eye-rolls and so on) and once day as she sat next to my dad, she looked over at my husband and said "I'm giving Papa the side-eye" - after he made a corny joke. This northern cardinal seems to be giving me the side-eye as he poses on a fence post.

This male cardinal was perched in the pomegranate tree that was decorated with icicles from freezing rain that occurred earlier that November morning.

Just wanted to welcome back my dear flickr friend Charlotte from her trip :D

Some say that cardinals bring messages of comfort to those who have lost a loved one. I found this beautiful poem to explain it.

Red Feathered Soul

When you’re lost or feeling down,

Don’t despair, just look around.

God made me red so you would see

That I still exist outside your memory.

I make my visits in bright daylight.

You’ll hear my song in distant flight.

My cardinal song is a call to you,

To tell you that I miss you, too.

I never left; I live through you.

A am everywhere and finally free,

Like love you cannot touch or see.

You’ll see me in the trees and skies.

I didn’t leave, love never dies.

-Elle Bee

Finally! We had a little rain - about 8/10 of one inch between 6am and 5pm on this day. We need much more for this to be a drought-ender but it was a start. I sat on my covered back porched and watched nature through my lens as the rain drops accumulated. A male lesser goldfinch seeming a bit puzzled as to what is happening - or wondering why some of the feeders are empty.

Green jays are colorful, raucous and entertaining. We have had a flock for a number of years on our property. They are not always easy to photograph because it seems they always post a sentry in a high tree to alert the others of potential dangers. They make a variety of harsh calls, including one that sounds very similar to a red-shouldered hawk and something that is between a gargle and a rattle. But occasionally they grace me with some wonderful moments to capture with my camera. During June this year the fledglings were particularly demanding and they found my yard with an abundance of feeders an easy solution to gathering food. The young ones will remain with the parents and help in caring for the next brood before they move on to raising their own. This sequence caught an interaction between an adult bird and a junior who was begging for food and appeared to have a temper tantrum before finally getting his or her way.

I kind of like how this one looks like a double exposure. The juvenile male rufous hummingbird was posing nicely on a twig when another hummingbird flew in for attack. I just caught a blur of the incoming bird. It just seemed like a ghostly apparition in the background.

A little meet and greet at the "ol' waterin' hole". I guess the northern cardinals are starting to choose mates for the upcoming breeding season. I thought it was nice to get a side-by-side comparison of the two genders of this species.

Pipevine swallowtails seem to be one of the more common of the swallowtail species on our property. I really love when I catch the iridescent blue markings on the wings.

This red-shouldered hawk is a resident on our property, I'm not sure if this is the male or female but we do have a pair that has mated for the past couple of years and I believe this is one of them. June 2022 in Montell, Uvalde County, Texas

The White-crowned Sparrow is a large sparrow with a small bill and a long tail. The head can look distinctly peaked or smooth and flat, depending on the bird’s attitude. Adult birds have a distinct black and white head, showing a white stripe in the center of the crown. Immature birds have brown and white on the head. They are winter visitors in our area, and across much of the US - breeding in the northern most regions of North America.

Lots of these woodpeckers live on our property. They live here year-round and family groups seem to stay together long after the youngsters have fledged and become able to forage independently. I love them. Similar to red-bellied woodpeckers but with a different range. They have a yellow-gold mark on the nape and near the bill (hence the name golden-fronted) and males also have a red spot on the crown.

One of the cutest little songbirds that people often don't see. They tend to stay in the underbrush, thornier the better, and move quickly. They do love fruit and suet so I have found them coming into my yard where the feeders are available and the pomegranate tree provide easy foraging. Rather plain looking at first glance, the mature ones have a pretty yellow face and tiny bright red shoulder patches.

Pretty pink or white flowers in a spiky cluster will eventually turn to bright red little berries. Birds love the berries, pollinators love the flowers. A nice little shrubby plant that I'm happy to have growing wild in my yard.

Vincas, or periwinkles, are beautiful flowers that come in a variety of colors. Easy to grow and tolerant of heat which makes them a good choice for Texas gardens. These had some water droplets from a recent watering.
