Black mangrove is a shrub or small tree to 12 meters. It grows in tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. The seeds start germinating while still attached to the tree, but the embryo stays within the fruit until fruit fall. Seed - very subject to desiccation, the seed is best sown fresh, though they have been known to float in salt water for one year without rooting yet still be viable. Young seedlings grow best when they are in contact with fresh water, though older seedlings need contact with sea water.

In an opening of forest on a Pennsylvania summer's day, the air was filled with the gentle, soothing and reassuring song of insects busy at work.

I chose to watch and focus on this one bee, an eastern bumble bee (on joe pye weed perhaps)....and this presentation is an attempt to portray the beauty and peace I experienced at that moment.

'How doth the little busy bee

Improve each shining hour,

And gather honey all the day

From every opening flower'.

Just a copper penny balancing on the edge of the brim, of one of seven light cups on the chandelier.

All the spring vibes.

***Thank you for all the kind comments and for taking time to look at my work***

Captured this hovering hummingbird with the light filtering through leaves in the background. She was happy to see that I had put some sugar water in the feeders, I think. Possibly female black-chinned or ruby-throated. Difficult to tell from this angle.

Patata de pato

Sagittaria lancifolia

The plant is conspicuous for its large, lance-shaped leaves and white three-petaled flowers, found in shallow wetlands. Male flowers are easily distinguished from female due to the dissimilarity between the 25 to 50 yellow stamens of the male and the sphere of green carpels of the female ones.

It is native to the southeastern United States.

Sunday everything had a sheet of ice, Thursday it is 80 degrees.

I love armadillos, but do not like to step in the holes they leave behind as they forage for grubs. This young one was out beside the highway and I walked close enough for some shots. The road was on a slope so I was able to position myself at the bottom so the animal was at eye level. This one was very curious and posed for quite a few photos as it sniffed the air and listened to the sounds from my camera. They reportedly have very poor eyesight. Usually they run away very fast when they realize a potential threat is nearby.

Sometimes you just have to take a break. Even squirrels have to stop and enjoy a moment of relaxation. Normally my dogs would have been barking to let him know he was a bit too close, but for some reason they just chose to let him rest.

Finally caught a male ruby-throat hummingbird with his colorful ruby throat in full display.

Also he was not on a feeder so that was a bonus.

Sachem, a species of skipper butterfly, on a blooming wildflower commonly called blue sage (also mealy sage or possibly cemetary sage). It is a salvia plant that blooms from early spring, often through summer into fall around here. Great for hummingbirds, butterflies and bees.
