This is a pretty blue dragonfly that I can recognize readily by the yellowish white face and the bright yellowish white spots on front edge of the wings. So many of them are not that easy for me to identify in the field. This one posed nicely on a blade of grass so I could get two separate angles on it.

This seems to be the most common swallowtail butterfly species in my area. Predominately black or brownish black. Upper surface of hindwing iridescent blue or blue-green. Underside of hindwing with submarginal row of 7 round orange spots in iridescent blue field. And, of course, the little "tails" that make it a swallowtail. This one is showing the pattern of the underwings and is getting nectar from the pride of Barbados (aka Mexican bird of paradise) blooms.

The northern cardinal juveniles in my yard were going through some interesting plumage transitions. Also, the youngest of this species have a dark bill compared to the bright orange of an adult bird. This little one got a feather stuck on its bill and did not seem to know what to make of it. Montell, Uvalde County, Texas in August 2021
The purple flower is, best I could find in trying to ID it, called a Texas stork's bill. Pretty and uncommon among all the other wildflowers growing. I think there is an Indian blanket flower right behind it.

This zinnia with contrasting yellow and red stripes caught my eye. One of the ones that came up from seeds I planted. I don't have as green a thumb as my mother but I keep working one it.

The name of this bird comes from its distinctive call "kis-ka-dee" but they also make some other sounds, one sound is similar to a high-pitched mew like a cat. They are flycatchers but also have been reported to catch small fish out of streams and they do love to eat fruit and berries. And my friend in Uvalde has them regularly coming to his birding blind to eat bits of dog food and suet. Colorful birds that range from south Texas down into the Yucatan. I saw some while on vacation in Cancun. These were taken at my friend's bird blind in Uvalde, Texas.
The state tree for Oklahoma is the Redbud and right now they are popping pinkish purples across the state. I was working on the light and color to get it to that 3D effect in 2D.
Male summer tanagers are beautiful birds to see and hear. They are one of the first birds to arrive in spring and last to leave for winter at our property. I sometimes hear the song before I see one of the birds. The females are duller, more of a yellow-olive green combination. This immature male is in the process of molting into his adult plumage. He is kind of calico looking at the moment. These birds love to eat oranges and he was standing guard over the one I had placed on a feeder pole.

This male made it clear that he was a ruby-throat by flashing that beautiful jewel-colored and sparkling gorget.

Butterflies such as this variegated fritillary love the wild coreopsis flowers that bloomed during late spring and early summer in our meadow. Some bright shades of yellow, brown, green. We had very little rain so we were thankful for any plants to help hold down the dust.

This female or juvenile male black-chinned was showing oof it's emerald green back while perched on a bare twig in the nearby pomegranate tree.

This bird seems to be having an awkward adolescent phase. It is transitioning from the dull plumage of a fledgling to the brightly colored red of an adult male.

This male cardinal was perched in the pomegranate tree that was decorated with icicles from freezing rain that occurred earlier that November morning.

I believe this is a recently fledged hooded oriole. Simply because the adults of that species were not too far away. This baby was testing the edibility of the tree moss.

One of the few flowers I found blooming along the trails at the golf course. It was a beautiful shade of pink.

Cedar waxwings seem to be very photogenic birds. They visit our place during winter months and leave in spring to go back to breeding grounds north of here. I was lucky to get a few shots of some during February 2020.

One of the larger species of North American damselflies. The male is more colorful with red eyes and mostly metallic red head and thorax. The abdomen is iridescent green growing darker with age. The wings are clear with bright red basal wing patches and white stigmas. The female has light brown eyes, a brown thorax with white stripes, and a metallic green and brown abdomen. Her wings are a clear light brown with varying amounts of red (or no red) at the base and white stigmas. Both sexes have heavily veined wings.
The female in this image was perched on top of a small twig sticking out of the water. Her metallic green body is beautiful.

This butterfly is a member of the group called skippers. The name of this particular species is sachem. It was on the wild prairie verbena that grows around our property during spring and summer months. Montell, Uvalde County, Texas during June 2021
I looked up and focused just in time to capture this male eastern bluebird as it took flight from a small bare limb. You can barely see the blue head but the distinctive red breast and flashy white of the belly and underwings are visible.

A member of the warbler family, this species seems to have more in common with our northern mockingbird. They are closer in size to a mockingbird, similar flight and foraging behavior and even have the ability to mimic some other bird calls. That bright yellow breast really stands out.
