One of the first proper photos I took with my adapted Trioplan lens which has just found its way to Sweden. I adapted the fixed lens from a broken Altix Vebur. It's pretty DIY looking, not incredibly sharp, but I am surprised it produces any images at all. 😅

....Most of my wildflower images are from around my property. The creek that runs through it attracts many birds & other wildlife, that help distribute seeds of all kinds of plant life.

Few trees look prettier than our red oaks in autumn. The leaves range from yellow-orange to deep maroon before they drop for winter.

The most colorful species of damselflies that I have encountered. This male was very cooperative and let me get a few shots as he perched on a dead twig.

Chauliognathus is a genus of soldier beetles. Adults have almost rectangular bodies. Some are red and black, similar to the military uniforms that were common before the usage of camouflage, hence the name of soldier beetles. Others are orange and black. The elytra or first pair of wings are softer than the elytra of most beetles, that is why their other common name is leatherwings. The adults are frequently found on flowers in summer and early fall. They are native to America and Australia.

This plant belongs to my mother-in-law and had beautiful flowers. They started out yellow but as they flowers opened they became a creamy vanilla color with a red center.

Just perched on top of our flagpole in Montell, Uvalde County. This day happened to be the last day we saw any of the martins. I guess all the babies had fledged and they decided it was time to head for other places. Can't wait until next March when they return again.

American goldfinches are strictly winter visitors in my area. While they are here the males are in duller plumage. In early spring, they start to get the beautiful gold/yellow and bold black coloring that will help attract breeding partners. They always leave Montell before the full breeding plumage comes in. They are slightly larger than our local full-time residents, the lesser goldfinch.

I find Zinnias very lovely and photogenic. Their color, texture and shape is becoming a favorite of mine! This time with a pretty visitor ;)

My photography is mostly nature. I enjoy macro photography a lot, but it is difficult to decide what a I like the most about this art.

“You are going to come across people in your life who inspire you, love you and change you. And that is a rare thing, but every once in a while you will come across someone who will completely rob you from your sleep and those are the people who are just too beautiful to put into words.” ~ r.m. drake

Vincas, or periwinkles, are beautiful flowers that come in a variety of colors. Easy to grow and tolerant of heat which makes them a good choice for Texas gardens. These had some water droplets from a recent watering.

April is the month, life would come to the sleepy little town of Muskogee Oklahoma, the park would have its annual Azalea Festival and people would pour in from all over the world. The traffic would be lines for miles to come into the park. But atlas all things come to an end, the old plants begun to die and be sick. Ice storms and heat took a fast toll on many plants. It has been a while since the crowds came but the plants are slowly coming back from the new young plants.

Vermilion flycatchers are among my favorite birds to see. The male has such a brilliant red color with black back and eye mask. The female is brown and white with a faint orange color to the underside near her tail. The immature are brown on top and white below with subtle brown streaks. They don't seem to be particularly shy about posing for photos.

These birds are just brilliant to look at. The male, seen here, is bright red underneath and on top of the head, with black wings and a bandit mask.

You only see the reddish colored feathers on Inca doves when they open their wings wide. I rarely seem to be quick enough to capture the moment when that brilliant flash of color shows through. But my luck was true on this day as I caught the moment twice. They seem like fairly plain little birds until then.

Finally! We had a little rain - about 8/10 of one inch between 6am and 5pm on this day. We need much more for this to be a drought-ender but it was a start. I sat on my covered back porched and watched nature through my lens as the rain drops accumulated. A male black-chinned hummingbird sucking up the nectar water. Even the rain doesn't stop these energy-burning little birds.

I'm not sure what the tiny red spot is, except it is a bug of some type. Possibly a red mite or a nymph stage of something else. It was so tiny and yet the bright red was eye-catching against that green leaf.

This female lesser goldfinch was busily gathering fluff from a dandelion plant, I assume for nesting material.

We had no tomatoes because this Summer tanager and his cohorts were eating them off the vine as fast as they could ripen. Male summer tanager in Montell, Uvalde County, Texas.

Unlike other sweat bees, they are not attracted to human sweat. They are generally green or blue, especially the head and thorax. Females are entirely iridescent green, but males typically have yellow and black stripes on their legs and abdomen.

This was an impressive bird to see in Cancun. I waited as long as possible for it to move to a more suitable photo spot but had to settle for shots with the busy background. This is a large heron with a bare yellow patch on the throat, white down the center of the throat to the breast, dark gray or black head and gray body with a pattern of buff colored bars or stripes on the neck (hence the name). This species has only one recorded sighting within the US - in Hidalgo County, Texas. The normal range is in Mexico down into Columbia. Yet another lifer on the books.

Almost always heard before it is seen, the Plain Chachalaca is sort of a long-tailed, tropical chicken that lives in the treetops. These sandy brown and gray birds walk along tree branches to eat flowers, buds, fruits, and insects. They’re locally fairly common in brushy and thorny forests along streams in the Rio Grande Valley and south into Central America. Their raucous, rhythmic morning chorus is a classic sound of the Tamaulipan brushlands that livens up any outing.

I was happy to see these birds and found them quite beautiful. If these are plain chachalacas I wonder what the fancy ones look like. To me they kind of look like a cross between a chicken and a roadrunner.

The females are rather plain looking birds, colored more for camouflage while siting on a nest. Brown, beige and white streaks over most of the body causes many people to mistake them for a large sparrow. This one posed beautifully on the century plant (agave Americana) that was blooming in my yard.
