more on my blog

I would sooner expect the frog to eat the mosquito . . .

I'm 72 years old, a country boy, and I just learned that Dragonflies and Mosquito Hawks are not the same things. I've called Dragonflies 'skeeter hawks' my entire life, but just found out that Mosquito Hawks are actually Crane Flies.

What a naturalist I am.

Some of my first attempts at HDR taken at Mosquito Lake on California SR4 just north of Lake Alpine. This is four shots with one stop differences.

This was such a beautiful spot and the place we saw the most Dogwoods changing color. Lots of pink, red, yellow and rich greens.

From an afternoon hike in june 2007. In the company of a few colleages from work I headed out for the mountain Skolma on a very nice afternoon. After reaching the top of the mountain I stayed behind when the others went back, hoping to catch some late afternoon/sunset light on my way down.

This was taken in the lower part of my descent from the mountain, standing in the small river that exits a lake in the Ytreflรธdalen valley.

The title refers to the thick swarms of mosquitos that surrounded the river at this time.

Even if there are no mosquitos visible in the picture there were so many of them that I had to keep wawing my hand in front of the lens while shooting, to keep them away from the lens. Some of the other shots from this location were ruined by insects on the lens itself or close to it. Strangely I did not get a single mosquito bite so it must have been some kind of non-biting type maybe.

Mosquito Lake, near Haines Alaska, beginning to ice over. I would love to camp here and try a little fishing, but the name of the lake doesnโ€™t sound promising to me

Mostly mosquito larvae and tadpoles.

Even though this isn't the best shot I felt like posting it to add some more variety of life-forms to the group.

Hodgson`s HawkEagle is the biggest raptor in Taiwan. It flies in forests with the elevation ranging from 1000 to 3000 km. Since the population of the Hawk Eagles are few,it is hard to track them down. Hawk Eagle often rests on branches in an open area before launching down to seize its prey. The Hawk Eagle reaches maturity at age seven. The female has a larger body than the male. Due to the scarce number of Hawk Eagles and the damages the eagle breeders have caused, the Hawk Eagle`s life is in great danger.

Recently there were posts from other photographers for days titled like World Tiger Day, World Elephant Day, World Photography day, etc. I did not have any special photos for such special day. Instead I have photo for today's speciality: Mosquitoes. :P

Thanks to ID help by Dr. Krishna Mohan, who is a surgeon by profession. :)

This was in my home garden last month at Mangalore. After I showed the pictures, my mother was like why did you let them live? Could have killed them after photography, no? :P

Last month was also when dengue epidemic created panic in the Dakshina Kannada district with few deaths. Only after identification I came to read about the species that it could be possible disease vector for Dengue disease. But no report of anyone affected by disease as far as I know in the neighborhood.

Common names: Mosquito (no specific name as far as I know)

Scientific name: Aedes cf. scutellaris

Disease vector: Dengue (possibility speculated)

Gender: Female on top and male on bottom

Place: Mangalore, Karnataka, India

Date: July 08, 2019

Last Friday an old colleague, he was my manager some time ago, invited me to go and see him fly so that I could take some picalillies of the event.

What you see is a deltawing and attached to is a Mosquito. The deltawing is from Italy and the Mosquito is from Sweden if I remember correctly. The Mosquito is a sleepingbag with an engine attached to it.

To take off, he starts running and simultaneously revvs the shit of that little engine. The wing does its thing and it lifts up and he's air airborne. Then he has to get his legs into the sleepingbag and zip up and retract the landing gear (two legs at the end). As far as he knows, he is the only one in the country who has one of these.

It's super cool. A man can fly, by himself!

The Bayard Local crosses over the Mosquito Creek South of Earling, Iowa. The bridge leans to the side slightly, giving the shot a bit more character.

The tenth in my series of steampunk inspired creepy crawlies. Probably the most fragile of them all, but at least it makes it squishable! I'll be posting one each day until I have them all photographed concluding with a group shot of them. Each standard photo will be accompanied by an "in the wild" photograph of them.

Beautiful sunset that I found quite by accident. Crepuscular Mosquitoes ready to launch on a day's work.

Other than the monotonous hum of mosquitoes on a sultry July night, the sounds of contented milked cows, the clanging of milk pails and the quiet murmur of a farmer and his offspring have faded and the barn that once was the center of them all, is nearing its final end. In my sunset years, the once familiar sounds of my farm days can still be heard but now they are only muted sounds in my memory.

A quick dash to Newborough Forest to try and catch some sunlight through the trees. Had to cut the evening short very soon on due to being attacked by swarms of mosquitoes!
