Usually at this time of year we're not still dealing with mosquitoes around Bend - and around most of the area they haven't been a problem at all. But for some reason, this area surrounding Dillon Falls is still swarming with the little bloodsuckers. I had already been here a handful of times prior to this visit, and knew to slather myself in mosquito repellent - but it was funny watching others walk three minutes from the parking lot, and then run back to their vehicles being chased by a swarm of skeeters.

Upside down aquarium is placed in a puddle so that the opening is just about submerged. Air is sucked out so that the water can rise and fill the space. Rising sun is reflected from the puddle surface, where some aquatic insect just made some ripples.

With essentially normal snowpack in much of the Sierra Nevada this year, mosquitos will be thriving in vernal pools, waiting for us to arrive and feed them..
I was amazed when I saw this on the snow and totally had to blink my eyes twice when I saw it walking! I can assure you, it Was walking! How did it survive, not only the cold but the snow and the wind? This was just hours after the latest snow storm. Is it a mosquito? I don't know. Sad to say, I left it to its fate!
The mosquitoes were so bad I could've used a breath mask. In fact, at one point a bunch of them ganged up and tried to fly off with my camera when my back was turned. Good thing it was attached to my tripod!
getting in the spirit of Halloween, my friend tries out the idea of being a mosquito caught in a net.
One of my favorite images from the 2022 Warbirds show at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre near Spilesby.
There was definitely a lot more than one but you can see a large one here exiting stage right. Worth it for the view.
A male mosquito drinking nectar from a flower. The males don't drink blood like the females do. Photographed in Maryland.

Walking a lot today doing errands and opportunity to bring the camera along for handheld shots. Surprisingly after the deluge of rain that has crippled parts of the BC west coast, our part of the rain forest did not have the same experience, as can be seen in the tame water levels of the creek.
