Loch Shiel (Scottish Gaelic: Loch Seile) is a 18 km-long freshwater loch, 120m deep, situated 20 km west of Fort William in Lochaber. Its nature changes considerably along its length, being deep and enclosed by mountains in the north-east (above) and shallow surrounded by bog and rough pasture in the south-west, from which end the 4 km-long River Shiel drains to the sea in Loch Moidart near Castle Tioram.

The surrounding mountains are picturesque but relatively rarely climbed as none quite reaches the 3,000 ft required for Munro status. The area is well wooded compared to the many Highland areas that have suffered from overgrazing, and much of the shore is designated a Special Area of Conservation.

Loch Shiel is only marginally above sea level and was in fact a sea loch a few thousand years ago when sea levels (relative to Scotland) were higher.

This 3-frame panorama is taken from atop the 18m-high Glenfinnan Monument at the end of a grey day. Glenfinnan is effectively where Bonnie Prince Charlie's ill-fated 1745 rebellion began and ended.

On the right can be seen the Glenfinnan Church. The loch featured in the Harry Potter films as the Black Lake near Hogwarts.

Another shot of the woods behind my home in mid-coast Maine on a murky, misty day.

I was hoping for a nice sunrise the morning I took this shot but instead I was greeted by grey overcast cloud except for the faintest glimmer of the sun trying to get through.

Moody landscapes in Shiretoko, Hokkaido, Japan.

Sometimes the nerdy-photographer in me would just go for the "technically perfect picture" while skimming through a set of photos from a specific location.

I have some "technically perfect" pictures of Convict Lake, where early morning sunbeams are kissing the peak of Mount Morrison in the background. They are - speaking in terms of pure composition or light-ballance - way more "perfect". But...

After asking my better half I was convinced that I should edit and post this quieter, much more atmospheric shot of the same location almost an hour before sunrise. So - here you go: No glowy mountaintops, no stunning reflections - just pure, calm mood. Pretty much like we felt while taking the pictures :)

This is Sea Lion Rock at Ecola State Park - the view from the secluded middle beach is awesome. It rained on my shortly after this.... additional drama added to sky and border in PSCS3.

Anemone coronaria is a species of flowering plant in the genus Anemone, native to the Mediterranean region.

This is not a crop, comp 'in camera'... just how I like it!

Each time I think... that's it, there's only so much you can do with flowers... and yet again and again, I'll see something new.

Being creative is not a choice... it is an urge in me.

Have a wonderful day, filled with love and thanx for your ALL your comments and visits, so appreciated, M, (*_*)

We filled up our water jugs and water bottles with cold natural spring water fresh flowing from the mountain and piped out to the roadside here, like we did yesterday at Caesar's Head Spring (cf. www.flickr.com/photos/131996261@N05/albums/72157718944557828 for my album of a dozen photos)

Trying to play with minimal light to get a moody feel to photos.

It's a learning curve!

X-MEN's Mystique in her lair.

The goal here was to create something a bit on the dark side but maintain rich hues. I chose this doll because of her vibrant red hair. Even with darker lighting, it still looks bold. She's such a gorgeous doll, and I absolutely love her in this blue Bold for Opulence Vanessa dress!

An unexpected burst of cloudiness in Darwin's dry season - usually we're on cloudless boring sunsets at this time of year! Lucky us! :D

I do love a moody sky! Taken in London a while ago but I thought it was quite a nice shot!

Mountain views taken while hiking on Whistler mountain's HIgh Note trail last autumn.

A wicked storm was on it's way in. We had to scramble to get to safety before the lightning hit. Times like this are thrilling with the urgent drama, but also serendipitous for providing enchanting light and tones.

Another image in comments taken looking to the west towards The Black Tusk with the storm on it's way. Amazing how fast they can blow in when hiking up high.

As always, thanks for taking a look and for any comments, faves or suggestions.

Curbar Edge in the Peak District National Park...

This shot was taken at low tide at Whiteabbey in a large pool of water left as the tide receded. The ripples in the sand seem to be pointing towards the fabulous reflection of the moody clouds and the golden light from the sunrise. Harland and Wolff cranes, Samson and Goliath, are just visible peeking above the horizon.
