An inspired British modification.

As an all-round, general purpose tank the Sherman was one of the best of World War II, but by 1943 it was getting past its prime. The gun, a dual purpose 75mm, was outclassed by comparable German weapons and the armour on later German tanks was too thick for it to deal with. An officer at Lulworth Camp, near Bovington, came up with the idea of fitting a better gun, the British 76.2mm, known as the 17 pounder. At first he could get no support but in due course the problem was investigated at Chertsey and solved. The new design would be known as the Sherman Firefly.

It was not a simple matter of fitting a new gun; the 17 pdr was much bigger than the 75mm so the turret had to be modified, with a bulge at the back to fit the radio and an extra hatch for the loader. The new ammunition was bigger so there were changes inside too. Indeed the demand for space was so great that hull machine-gunner, sitting to the right of the driver was disposed of and the weapon aperture sealed.

In action the Firefly was a success. The gun proved capable of dealing with the heavier German tanks but, since the armour had not been thickened to match it was still very vulnerable. It was also rather obvious, with the long gun sticking out like a sore thumb so various attempts were made to disguise it. Our exhibit is painted to represent a tank of Guards Armoured Division around the time of Arnhem.

Well, I got an x-acto knife and some brown paint recently, so I painted a few weapons that I had lying around and wanted to paint. Also, I wanted to try to make better mods than my original, very crappy mods. I think all these came out well. Please tell me what you think. :)

During the early 21st century many people were concerned with the prospect of genetic modification of food. This cartoon depicts this general fear and concern amongst New Zealanders.

I kept looking at the purple circle and thinking: it's missing something...So, I took it apart this morning and added some orange stitching.

This was requested a long time ago, but it took me quite a while to study the best way to implement this.

Institutional modifications at their finest (!) Clearly the structure we see here now once was charming when the Ryerson family owned the property. Its suffered under the decades of being a camp and with it low costs solutions.

It was Omar's 16th Birthday and he said he wanted to get his ears pierced. I decided that I would make his first piercings a memorable event so took him to Jade Dragon to get it done right. I didn't want him to have the same experience I had with my first piecings. Done by myself at home with a needle and a potato, and then having to wear a hoodie for 2 weeks so as to hide my pircings from my parent.

Luckily this solution only involved adding plastic, which is trivial for injection-molded parts -- just remove more metal from the tool. :)
