Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a national park in Sri Lanka. It is of international significance and can been designated a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The hilly virgin rainforest, part of the Sri Lanka lowland rain forests ecoregion, was saved from the worst of commercial logging by its inaccessibility, and was designated a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage Site in 1988. The reserve's name translates as Kingdom of the Lion.
The reserve is only 21 km from east to west, and a maximum of 7 km from north to south, but it is a treasure trove of endemic species, including trees, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
Because of the dense vegetation, wildlife is not as easily seen as at dry-zone national parks such as Yala. There are about 3 elephants and the 15 or so leopards are rarely seen. The commonest larger mammal is the endemic Purple-faced Langur.
An interesting phenomenon is that birds tend to move in mixed feeding flocks, invariably led by the fearless Greater Racket-tailed Drongo and the noisy Orange-billed Babbler. Of Sri Lanka's 26 endemic birds (suranganet), the 20 rainforest species all occur here, including the elusive Red-faced Malkoha, Green-billed Coucal and Sri Lanka Blue Magpie.
Reptiles include the endemic Green pit viper and Hump-nosed vipers, and there are a large variety of amphibians, especially tree frogs. Invertebrates include the endemic Common Birdwing butterfly and the inevitable leeches.

This is some of the finest digital art I've come across in Second Life. Check it out in the Maximum Minimum Sim.

State Listed as Endangered in Vermont; Threatened in Maine, New Hampshire; Special Concern in Connecticut
The spotted turtle is one of the smallest breeds of turtle in the world, with a maximum length of 6 inches. The turtles live a long time, up to 40 – 80 years! The spotted turtle is dark, with a warm red underbelly. Their hard shells, heads, and limbs are splattered with yellow spots, the number of spots increasing with age. This particular species of turtle is semi-aquatic and found along the eastern coast of the United States. They inhabit marshes, wet meadows, ponds, forested and shrub swamps, slow-moving streams and rivers, low marshy flooded areas, and seasonal pools.
The spotted turtle does not reach maturity until the ages of 7-10. These turtles lay only 3-7 eggs per year. The eggs and young hatchlings have a high mortality rate due to human traffic and predators. Spotted turtles make their nests in sandy soils on land, and often the nests are accidentally destroyed by unsuspecting humans or off-roading vehicles. Another factor influencing the spotted turtles survival are natural predators, such as raccoons, dogs, foxes, and skunks.
Spotted turtles were listed as threatened in Vermont in 1989 and ten years later, as populations did not grow, was listed as endangered. Spotted turtles have been found in three locations in Vermont. Two of the sites are compromised by surrounding landuse. At one site, a railroad bisects the wetland. Twenty under rail crossings have been installed to allow safe passage of the turtles. A road parallels much of the other compromised site. Both are believed to have very small populations. The third known site is more robust and found within a large wetland complex, which provides some buffering from surrounding landuse. Spotted turtles are listed in Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. According to a press release from the Center for Biological Diversity, over 2 million live turtles are caught in the wild in the United States and shipped to Asia. A recent study published in the journal Biological Conservation estimated that over half of all turtle species are threatened with extinction.
Warning! In Vermont anyone taking, possessing, transporting, buying, or selling threatened or endangered species shall be fined not more than $2,000.00 nor less than $500.00 or imprisoned for not more than 60 days, or both. Upon a second and all subsequent convictions or any conviction while under license suspension the violator shall be fined not more than $4,000.00 nor less than $2,000.00 or imprisoned for not more than 60 days, or both.

Galloway works from each state's official list of species identified as endangered, threatened or extinct. She has created a series of covered jars, one urn for each species, illustrating the smallest Agassiz Clam Shrimp to the largest Eastern Elk.

In 2008, Hard Rock Park opened in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina as the world's first rock n' roll theme park. Inside guests could explore the six different music themed areas. Highlights included Led Zeppelin - The Ride, a giant multi-inversion coaster, Eagles: Life in the Fast Lane, a mine train themed to the popular country group, Maximum RPM, a one of a kind coaster with a ferris wheel lift, and much more. Unfortunately, due to low attendance numbers and even lower profit, the park was forced into bankruptcy at the end of the 2008 season. In 2009, the park reopened as Freestyle Music Park until it once again closed later that year. As of February 2011, the park remains abandoned with the park's fate lying in court.
Maximum RPM was a first of it's kind coaster. Each of Mini Cooper shaped car would slowly load into place on a piece of track attached to a ferris wheel. The entire 'ferris wheel' mechanism would then rotate bringing the cars to the top of the coaster. While the ride did initially did have some trouble with a delayed opening, the coaster was a fantastic family addition to the park.

Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake in the U.S., with a maximum depth of 1,645 feet (501 m), trailing only Oregon's Crater Lake at 1,949 ft (594 m). Tahoe is also the 16th deepest lake in the world, and the fifth deepest in average depth. It is about 22 mi (35 km) long and 12 mi (19 km) wide and has 72 mi (116 km) of shoreline and a surface area of 191 square miles (490 km2). Washoe Indians used the lake. Approximately two-thirds of the shoreline is in California. The south shore is dominated by the lake's largest city, South Lake Tahoe, California, which adjoins the town of Stateline, Nevada, while Tahoe City, California, is located on the lake's northwest shore. Although highways run within sight of the lakeshore for much of Tahoe's perimeter, many important parts of the shoreline now lie within state parks or are protected by the United States Forest Service. The Lake Tahoe Watershed (USGS Huc 18100200) of 505 sq mi (1,310 km2) includes the land area that drains to the lake and the Lake Tahoe drainage divide traverses the same general area as the Tahoe Rim Trail.

Seeing a need for more organized forms of law enforcement, the Montana Territorial Legislature requested funds for a prison during its winter session of 1866-67. The United States Congress agreed that the territory needed a prison, approved the request for funding, and Deer Lodge was chosen for the site of the new Territorial Prison.
