The rustiness and discolouration of the metal shutters communicates the age of the building. This is where the padlock locks the metal shutters.
The materials are prepared in boxes to allow their easy transport to the schools on a daily basis. Each box contains an itinerary of the materials to allow an easy stock take tome undertaken in between activities.

The landslide dammed the river in 1925, but the dam failed two years later releasing floodwaters downstream and killing several people. Today, the landslide reach provides some nice whitewater (we saw an intrepid kayaker launch into it). You can also see the slide material in the left bank of the river. Flow conditions here are high, as we were visiting around the time of peak snowmelt.
