[EN] MATERIAL WANT is the first collaboration of artist/researcher Matthew Plummer-Fernandez and net art pioneers JODI. Bringing together their respective practices, they explore hybridisations of algorithms, errors, Internet found objects and digital fabrication. The result of this joint effort? A series of 3D-printed sculptures, uncanny, yet familiar objects, between incongruous assemblages and distorted reality.

I took this photograph during an excorted visit to Bass Rock which is home to over 150,000 gannets at the peak of the season. This bird was returning to it's nest with some new bedding material, ie kelp.

Gannet adults are large and bright white with black wingtips. They are distinctively shaped with a long neck and a long pointed beak, long pointed tail, and long pointed wings. At sea they flap and then glide low over the water, often travelling in small groups. They feed by flying higher and circling before plunging into the sea. It breeds in significant numbers at only a few localities and so is an Amber List species.

The biggest mainland breeding colony ia at RSPB's Bempton Cliffs. There are two mainland colonies - at Bempton and Troup Head, Scotland. Also there are large island colonies on St Kilda, the Northern Isles; Bass Rock in Scotland and Grassholm in Wales.

The gannetts arrive at their colonies from January onwards and leave between August and October, with many migrating as far as the West coast of Africa.

The lower ledges of the Bass Rock are also home to shags, guillemots and razorbills, with seals hauling up on the rocks below. Bass Rock itself was formed 320 million years ago and is the remains of one of many active volcanoes in the area. With an incredible past, it has played a key role throughout the history of Scotland - a religious retreat during early Christianity; fortress and prison in the time of the Covenanters and Jacobites; and a strategic stronghold during the times of the Scottish and English wars. Notably it has been owned by the Hamilton-Dalrymple family for the last 300 years.

I'm going to be using this Moleskine to help me study for the boards. Right now, it's completely empty, but I'm going to start jotting down some quick study notes over this break.

PIXELS IN THE MATERIAL WORLD: From Frank Lloyd Wright to Marching Cubes

Jesse Colin Jackson • University of California, Irvine

Tuesday November 24th 2015 • The Studio for Critical Making, Emily Carr University, Vancouver, Canada

Digital images consist of pixels: squares that carry color and brightness values. The three-dimensional world can also be understood to be composed of rectilinear units, such as bricks, blocks, or voxels. Conceptions of area and volume as assemblies of discrete units are increasingly predominant in the digital age, as these units are easily reduced to a binary series of zeros and ones. In this talk, Jesse Colin Jackson will demonstrate that a unit-based understanding of space can be illuminated by the architectural ideas of Frank Lloyd Wright. The Marching Cubes algorithm is an early method for making a surface binary, still commonly used in computer graphics; Jackson will describe his interactive installation that, through an intervention inspired by Wright, permits tactile engagement with this algorithm, and generates dialogue about the ways in which information technology shapes contemporary culture.

Items donated to the Materials Science Engineering department by the family of Ernest Kirkendall, a U-M alum who wrote a very controversial landmark paper in the 1947, proving that metals diffuse into each other in a different way than was widely believed at the tall. He discovered the Kirkendall Effect, which is still taught to MSE students today.

Sears Building Materials 1909

Sears Building Materials 1909 advertising portable buildings, sectional buildings, the closest thing to prefabricated that Sears ever sold until the Homart Homes were introduced.

I would be REALLY surprised to find one of these still standing! Think storage shed in a box from a home improvement store. Will those still be around in 100 years? Doubtful.

I have a BLOG about kit homes!

Shelburne Museum exhibits in Vermont

from wiki: Fred “Silo” Quimbly constructed the Round Barn, a three-story building measuring eighty feet in diameter, in 1901 in East Passumpsic, Vermont. Round barns enjoyed a brief period of popularity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Shakers designed and built the first round barn in America in 1826 in Hancock, Massachusetts. The publication of the building’s plans in a nationally distributed farm journal in 1896, sparked the construction of approximately twenty-four comparable barns in Vermont beginning in 1899.

Economy of labor was the fundamental aim of a round barn’s design. Feed chutes connecting the upper and middle levels allowed for easy distribution of hay, stored in the spacious loft, and silage, stored in the central silo. Farmers could stanchion up to sixty cows around the center silo for feeding and milking and easily remove manure through trap doors that opened to the basement below where it could be collected and removed by horse-drawn wagons.

In 1985 and 1986 the Shelburne Museum relocated the Round Barn to the Museum grounds. A helicopter flew the upper segment of the silo, which weighs nine thousand pounds, from Passumpsic to Shelburne, while workmen dismantled the remainder of the building piece-by-piece and transported it on flatbed trucks to Museum grounds. After reconstruction, new materials replaced what had aged beyond use.

While the roof of the barn was being replaced in April 2009, workers noted the signature of a painter, John Morency, on the silo.[
