This studio aimed to develop and further a students' understanding of architecture by studying the intersection of at, design and materials science. Three primary exercises helped develop student’s techniques of drawing, making and organizing structures. This course was specifically created to play off students' non-architectural education by introducing a domain of investigation whereby students learned to design through the lens of cross-disciplinary experimentation.
Throughout the semester students investigated generative art, design and materials science through the lens of “pattern formation” and attempted to extract principles, learned techniques and developed strategies for design. By studying the formation of materials students explored both the fundamental science as well as new advances in research to understand the building blocks of matter, organizational patterns, processes of material creation and micro-to-macro material behavior. To draw comparison, students also researched both contemporary and historic works of generative art and design to understand the rules, logic and components of the work and how high-level patterns emerge from local interaction. These seemingly opposite fields converged and become precedents for three exercises: 1. Generative drawings, 2. New material formations and 3. Living objects / growing structures.

Materials Park is the headquarters of ASM International, a professional organization for Material Scientists, engineers and metallurgists, among others. This is the largest open air geodesic dome in the world and the site has it's own unique zip code. They hosted the annual ASM International Leadership Days Awards dinner on site, which is why there is a tent set up in the foreground.

The TMH booth was very focused on creating a cutting edge experience for customers. Instead of piles of paper brochures and leaflets, visitors accessed information about Toyota Material Handling using touch-screens placed hroughout the booth.
The screen software covered six main sections,
including a product description function through which users could click down to pages of details about any of our individual products.

In light of us being about 6 months away from having a 'baby Olive' in the house, I've been organizing like crazy to transform my 'craft room' into the 'nursery'. The first step was to organize the many different projects/materials I have and store them accordingly in a closet in Justin's office. (Justin calls me the 'Project Starter' because I start so many different hobbies and then move onto a new one. Looking at this wide array of materials, I think he's right!)

The Cox Creek Dredged Material Containment Facility is one of the sites used for placement of sediment that has been cleared from shipping channels in the Baltimore Harbor. The Cox Creek facility is located on the western shore of the Patapsco River, one mile south of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. It represents the effective re-use of a past industrial site and has triggered the restoration of wildlife habitat in the neighboring Swan Creek watershed. Cox Creek began receiving dredged material in 2005. Today, Maryland Environmental Service, in support of the Port of Baltimore, dredge an average of five million cubic yards of sediment from the harbor and its approach channels every year. Approximately 100 acres of the 1993 purchase have been permanently preserved for wildlife habitat and approximately 11 acres of the Swan Creek wetlands were enhanced and restored. This tidal wetland environment now includes open water, low marsh with non-vegetated tidal flats, saltbush assemblages and a beach/sand bar area. The National Aquarium at Baltimore and many citizen volunteers have helped to monitor and restore the wetlands.
