Mark Manders (1968) explores the quiet depths of human consciousness. The internationally acclaimed artist fixes thoughts and moments in sculptures, paintings and installations that hover between the tangible and the elusive. His oeuvre breathes a poetic tension: intimate and universal, concrete and mysterious. For his solo exhibition Mindstudy at Voorlinden, he brings together more than eighty works – both iconic and more recent pieces – which together form a layered journey through his world of thought.

The saying “all knees and elbows” is often attributed to someone who has yet to mature or fully grow into their frame. Nature, likewise, goes through a similar stage in spring when the forest has yet to mature into its summer greens and much of what you see is all branches and mud and chaos. This can be a huge challenge during the seasonal shift for landscape photographers considering one of the primary goals of the craft is to reduce nature’s chaos and confusion into one, easily readable, so-called “clean” frame, free from distractions. Being somewhat naturally inclined to question guidelines and to gently poke at their limits, I often shoot scenes that I know at the moment of capture are not going to be received well by those who find comfort in the well-worn confines of the sandbox or who otherwise like to position themselves as the gatekeepers to the status quo. Most of my attempts in this vain are failures, rightfully so, but fun nonetheless. Some, on the other hand, come out personally satisfying, although still largely rejected by the critics and powers that be who stand between an image and its ability to reach market. This photograph is one that appears to be falling into the latter category.
The Occoquan Stream Valley accessed via the Occoquan-Bull Run National Recreational Trail comes alive in the spring season with Virginia Bluebells, a seasonal ephemeral wildflower that paints the forest floor with a carpet of blues and light pink hues. Being an ephemeral though, these guys have to sneak in before the canopy leafs out and steals all of the sunshine from the forest floor. By late May these flowers are all but completely gone, like an illusion, only to return again next spring. Thus, when the Bluebells poke through the ground in early spring much of the surrounding environment is scraggly branches, ample boot-sucking mud, and otherwise nature’s awkward early-season “knees and elbows.” Macro opportunities abound for the small-scene inclined, but contextual landscapes are complicated at best. A few things I learned this season, my first concertedly chasing a few photographs of these wildflowers: my initial thought that overcast and calm weather would provide the most optimal conditions for getting a pop of color were somewhat misguided. I found that late evening or early morning sun on a clear day made for the most dramatic spring scenic, as looking into the light provided for beautiful backlit spring green leaves. Once I thought about this it made perfect sense: sunlight is the driver of spring growth and thus an essential element in any composition that speaks towards the story of the season. However, any light on the bluebells would cause blowouts with exposure and thus, I went in search for late evening light that would make the newly minted spring green understory dance, while also being at such an angle as to mostly shade the delicate bluebells to maintain an even single-exposure. This proved to be a strategy that I continued to follow at both sun-up and sun-down for several days with mild to moderate success.
The resultant shot, what you see above/below, has been confirmed thus far by the critics and gatekeepers as poor composition and of little value to the commercial photography market. However, I find it honest and authentic to the chaos that is spring, and thus, for me personally, a satisfying take-away from a week of shooting. It could certainly be better, but then again, what photograph have you ever really taken that couldn’t be improved?

It's been a few months since I shot this. These guys recorded a full-length, and hit me up to have some promotional photos and album art taken. The name of their album is "Starting Over", and they wanted to shoot in a local elementary school. This is what we came up with.

In 2016, Hatfield House commemorated the 100th anniversary of the first official tank trials which took place in the Hatfield estate in February 1916. A replica Mark IV tank was on display during the 2016 season.

It may look like Mark, the zookeeper, is taking a well-deserved break, but he's actually working. A second keeper is feeding penguins, calling out their names, and indicating what type of fish each penguin has just eaten. Mark is keeping a careful record of their diet.
Être bien préparé c’est déjà la moitié du travail, et dans le cas des sorties extravéhiculaires probablement même les 3/4 ! Mark et Aki aident Oleg et Piotr à enfiler leurs scaphandres. Le Orlan russe (c’est son nom, qui signifie aigle maritime 😎) est fiable et durable, et son ouverture par l’arrière est extrêmement bien pensée. La première d’une longue série de sorties extravéhiculaires s’est déroulée hier pour connecter et continuer l’installation de MLM. Oleg et Piotr ont eu une très, très longue journée. Ils ont commencé à se préparer à 6h30, et après une courte pause déjeuner sont sortis de la Station à 14h41 pour n’y revenir qu’à 22h35 😳 En tant que 3e membre de l’équipage Soyouz, c’est souvent Mark qui aide sur le segment 🇷🇺 - en plus il est très doué et il parle plutôt bien le russe. Aki est venu donner un coup de main aussi, et en tant que photographe officiel ™ de la Station (oui c’est mon titre maintenant), je suis passé immortaliser la scène. La prochaine sortie est prévue jeudi pour Oleg et Piotr, il en reste environ une dizaine…!
Preparation is half the work, and for spacewalks it is probably three times the work! Mark and Aki helped Pyotr and Oleg get into their Orlan suits. These Russian-made suits are a classic design and are respected all over the space industry, so durable and reliable, and getting into them through the opening in the back is well thought out. It was the first of many spacewalks to connect and finish installing MLM, and Oleg and Pyotr had a long, long day yesterday. They started at 6:30 our time to prepare for the spacewalk, had a short lunch break, left the Station at 14:41 and returned at 22:35 spending almost eight hours outside! Mark, as the third crewmember of the Soyuz, was the one helping out on the Russian segment. He speaks great Russian and has all the skills, Aki was here to help out as well, and me to take pictures as usual (I’ve become the Expedition’s official photographer it seems). Oleg and Pyotr are scheduled to do the same again on Thursday, around ten more spacewalks are planned for MLM/Nauka installation!

My previous Hulkbuster MOC was 21 cm tall, this one's only 18 tall but is a lot more poseable and way lighter. This Hulkbuster uses a frame from my "Iceberg" MOC. It can do a superhero landing pose, so now this is my favorite Mk. 44 MOC.

I decided that I would try and hike to St. Marks Summit for sunset tonight. It was a pretty nice hike with some cool stops/views along the way. I was fortunate enough to get some really awesome cloud formations, although I never really got a colourful light show. I’m going to try again for sure ;-).
Trekking down in the dark was a little sketchy, but not too bad. I had my headlamp on, but there were some slippery tree roots for the first half way down. You’d think that going up would take longer but this was not at all the case. I’d estimate that it took 15-20 minutes longer on the way down.
'Tug' No. 60043 departs with another load of sand bound for Hayes. Still (for now) manual signalling on an electrified railway.

we had bbq in the park today. as usual i threw on some tofu sausages for myself, and took care of other people's meat.

You may think this is a modern day pixie or hobbit, but my mate Mark is actually well over 6 ft (182 cm+) tall. The tree however is around 400 years old.
I met Mark while I was on the recent Flickr Worldwide Photowalk, themed Howdy Stranger!
I was walking with a couple fellow photographers down the Chicago Riverwalk and noticed Mark while he was having a beverage outside at The Hideout.
I explained my project and asked him if he would come out to pose for a portrait. I found out that his name is Mark Charade and he's one half of The Roustabouts, a London based DJ duo.
He had been invited to perform at a wedding at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago and was spending a few days soaking up the sights before flying off to NYC.

A Praia do Gunga é uma das mais famosas de Alagoas. Fica no município de Roteiro e às margens da Lagoa do Roteiro que encontra-se como mar bem em frente às tendas e bares do Gunga.
Logo após passar pela ponte sobre a Lagoa do Roteiro tem-se uma bonita imagem. Às margens da rodovia AL-101 estão uma infinidade de coqueiros que estendem-se por muitos quilômetros.
A Praia do Gunga fica no interior de uma fazenda de coqueiros e para chegar até ela é necessário ingressar pelos portões da fazenda.
Ingressamos na fazenda e seguimos até a praia que conta com muitas barracas de praia. Aproveitamos para almoçar em uma delas.
Após 500mts da entrada da fazenda existe um mirante de onde é possível avistar a Praia do Gunga, a fazenda de coqueiros e a Barra de São Miguel.
