Christmas sales by Marks & Spencer at the Atrium 1 of Paragon Shopping Centre, Orchard Road for the Christmas 2022 Festival.
a little quicky piece almost didnt do it because I was busy painting a funny character. not a huge fan of walls but good practice for characters...thanks Land Mark shop and novel...and sloke from texas for kickin me down some colors.....
I've noticed Mark few times and like many people that I see in and around Wellington he was just walking slowly on his own staring a the ground just minding his own business.
I always like to respect people and not invade their space but his face was so compelling that wanted to capture his portrait. I walked along side him and struck up a conversation in the hope that he might let me photograph him. Thankfully he said yes in exchange for some money and after a brief conversation we went our seperate ways.
Mark wasn't very talkative and I didn't feel it was right to ask his story but that's ok. I was just happy that he gave me permission to capture his portrait. Perhaps his portrait tells the story on It's own.
After I had left I was reminded of the sad reality of how many people struggle with loneliness. It can happen to anyone rich or poor, those with many friends and those with very little people int heir lives. It didn't want to outstay my welcome but hope that I get to see Mark again find out more of his story and I hope he remembers me.
It's important to remind ourselves that we know nothing about another person's situation to be kind at all times.

Spring peepers are good leapers - it went from the deck railing to the floor in a second then sprang away to the safety of the grill cover. It's easy to ID spring peepers by their diminutive size (less than an inch long) and that X on their backs.
Finally got to meet up with my man Mark Loper after being contacts on flickr for a couple years. He came down from Conneticut with his girlfriend and I showed them around the hicktown that I call home.

Mark Ottens is represented in the current exhibition "A Marketplace of Mysteries" in the Carlson Tower Gallery of North Park University by this monumental drawing titled "A Torrent Released from an Arm on South Division Avenue, 1988", ink on paper, 99" x 65.5“, 2013
Here is Mark's statement:
There is a sequence of paintings by Theo Van Doesburg which begins with a straightforward depiction of a cow and ends with an abstraction of a cow which looks nothing like a cow.
I set myself the goal of drawing everything. I ended up with something somewhat less than anything and slightly more than nothing.
It was an attempt at creating an epic doodle. A doodle in scope along the lines, in the literary world, of something like War and Peace or Gravity's Rainbow as opposed to something like the Family Circus found in the Sunday comics.
Another approach, or a different view of looking at it. The blank piece of paper existed with a specific weight. The pens I use are made in Japan out of plastic and metal. They contain ink; the ink is probably only a small portion of the overall weight of the pen. I used perhaps seventy of these pens on the drawing. What in effect I was doing was transferring some of the weight of the pen onto the paper. Making each of the pens slightly lighter and making the paper somewhat heavier.
For me it was something of an exercise, I altered the paper and I helped out the pen manufacturer incrementally.
I guess the interesting thing about it is the decision making involved, in how the ink got from the pen onto the paper. In what the ink came up with, in the trail the pens left behind.

Mark Lanegan Painting. This is a new black and white painting I did of Lanegan. It's loosely based on a photo that Steve Gullick took of Lanegan a few years ago but with my usual expressive stamp on it. I did a small sketch of Lanegan a few years back that ended up oin his Myspace page where I didn't give him any eye's so I thought I would carry on that tradition in this piece.
The Original framed piece will be available for sale soon with a limited print run to follow. So if your a Lanegan fan or know someone who is this could be an awesome gift or wall filler.
