We were about to meet my parents for dinner in the Pearl District, they had long heard of my illustrious friend, he had even spent several nights on their couch, when I was housesitting. So now we were going to have the dinner.

Mark Manders (1968) explores the quiet depths of human consciousness. The internationally acclaimed artist fixes thoughts and moments in sculptures, paintings and installations that hover between the tangible and the elusive. His oeuvre breathes a poetic tension: intimate and universal, concrete and mysterious. For his solo exhibition Mindstudy at Voorlinden, he brings together more than eighty works – both iconic and more recent pieces – which together form a layered journey through his world of thought.

The International Space Station sometimes feels like a student house. During the week we are all busy working, on our own schedules, running experiments and pass each other by without having time to chat. At night we retreat to our own rooms to talk to our families and study for the day ahead. I took this picture of Mark in his crew quarters as I passed by on the way to my own. Mark joined the NASA astronaut corps at the same time as I joined ESA as an astronaut. That's not the only thing we have in common, we were both on the Space Station in 2017 (but we didn't meet up in space then) and were on a NEEMO underwater training mission together. Yesterday Mark spent two hours working on the Celestial Immunity experiment in the Japanese Kibo laboratory. He was exempt from cleaning duties to finish up this experiment :) Mark arrived here on his second Soyuz flight, so he has spent a lot of time training in Russia and speaks the language very well… that might be why he has both versions of his nametag on his door 🇷🇺

Il est issu de la promotion de 2009 de la NASA, recrutée en même temps que la nôtre à l’ESA – on a donc découvert le métier ensemble et on s'est croisé pendant une mission NEEMO. Hier, alors que d’habitude on ne travaille pas le samedi après-midi, il a passé deux heures les mains dans la boîte à gants pour finaliser une expérience en immunologie. 👏

I've noticed Mark few times and like many people that I see in and around Wellington he was just walking slowly on his own staring a the ground just minding his own business.
I always like to respect people and not invade their space but his face was so compelling that wanted to capture his portrait. I walked along side him and struck up a conversation in the hope that he might let me photograph him. Thankfully he said yes in exchange for some money and after a brief conversation we went our seperate ways.
Mark wasn't very talkative and I didn't feel it was right to ask his story but that's ok. I was just happy that he gave me permission to capture his portrait. Perhaps his portrait tells the story on It's own.
After I had left I was reminded of the sad reality of how many people struggle with loneliness. It can happen to anyone rich or poor, those with many friends and those with very little people int heir lives. It didn't want to outstay my welcome but hope that I get to see Mark again find out more of his story and I hope he remembers me.
It's important to remind ourselves that we know nothing about another person's situation to be kind at all times.
