At the sugarbush operation that we visited, the tap and bucket method has been replaced by a tap and line method that uses gravity to feed the sap from individual trees down to a central point where it is then pumped back up to a modern day version of the sugar shack for further processing into food grade maple syrup.

The backpack pushes my shoulders into a slump, my eyes lifting wearily from the ground ahead of me to meet the bursts of orange that blankets the earth. I gasp slightly, and adjust my eyes to this new hue.

I took a trip out to Lost Maples to see the foliage. Unfortunately, Mother Nature wasn't the most cooperative this year, and the colors weren't as great as when I had visited 4 years ago. It was still great to see some color and to be outdoors!

I had a few minutes after work yesterday to shoot a few photos of the fall foliage on display at the Washington Arboretum. The trick is to find a nice composition excluding sky and people! Fortunately, there are many possibilities here!
Technical details: Canon 5D Mark II, EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM at f/22 and 28mm focal length, 0.6 second exposure (after the sun has gone down!) at ISO 800. I also used a B+W circular polarizer for this image.
