big leaf maple.......fall 2013. Nothing I do could capture the beauty of this tree. No camera could catch it.
The remains of the Maples Motel in Muncie, Indiana. From my understanding, the motel was abandoned sometime around the reroute of an Indiana highway around the city of Muncie. I would have liked some interior shots, but an uncomfortable feeling told me not to go in there. According to my later research, one known murder took place here in the 90s, as well as some other suspicious activity.

Chalk maple occurs several disjunct populations, including one in extreme eastern Texas and western Louisiana. Here it is rare on mesic calcerous slopes in the understory of hardwood dominated forests.
My backyard big tooth maple is showing some color. It will display fiery red foliage for about a week and then only bare branches until spring.
Not too happy with this image, apart from the lovely colour. I just have to post a red Silver Maple leaf each fall now, though, as this is so rare in our city! This Silver Maple tree, possibly a hybrid, is only a tiny tree that is growing in Bowness Park, so there are limited leaves from which to choose.
Went on a hike in the woods with my kids, blazing our own trail through the forest to see what we could find. Along the way we collected some interesting and unusually colorful leaves. This one was one of my favorites.
UPDATE: If you're curious, I used my soft-box with an open back that I placed a black foamboard behind. I used a spotlight in the foreground about 45 degrees off and blocked the light from bleeding into the background to keep it dark.
