A Five-Year Photographic Journey with the M4/3 Series.
Žužemberk, Slovenia
done with Nikon D3 and manfrotto 303plus
I've done a video log about ther picture on my blog:
The shot:
3 Exposures HDR (-2,0,+2 EV), Nikkor 18-70, ISO 200, F3.5, Manfrotto tripod
Photomatix
Tonemapped using the detail enhancer.
Gimp:
- Bumped up contrast a bit
- Unsharp mask
- GREYCstoration for noise reduction
Background:
When I first walked around in Amsterdam, I was excited about the canals. So the first canal I encountered, I set up the tripod and snapped away. Then when I was satisfied, I would pack up the tripod again, and walk off to the next point of view. There the exact same sequence would happen again.
So in an hour, I must have advanced about 500m. Now when I'm back home, I look at all of those shots. And they all look exact the same. Canal in the center; some boats; some bicycles; a bit of trees; with a topping of sky.
That's why I need to go back to Amsterdam. To take pictures of everything else.

After revising our equipment, I found that we have some photography gear that I don’t really need anymore. Instead of selling the gear on eBay, I’ve decided to run a weekly giveaway for my blog readers. The giveaways will be running every week from Friday to Friday, until we run out of supplies:-).

While I really love the Vivitar 2x Macro-Focusing Teleconverter, I decided to step up to a real bellows. I found this PB4 in excellent condition at a local camera shop. At $300, the price was fair and then the sales guy cut $50 off plus threw in a set of pre-AI extension rings for another $10. Not bad. I needed at least one extension ring to allow my D300+MBD10 to properly clear the rail.
Shown here is the D300 with a 27.5mm extension ring M attached behind the PB4. In front of the PB4 is another M extension ring and an E2 diaphragm release ring (14mm) coupled to my Nikon Series-E 100mm f/2.8.
Total extension is 259mm. Reproduction ratio works out to 2.5:1. I can hit 5:1 with my 50/1.8D.
On our way back from the Subway, Alan and I spent quite a bit time at these nice cascades. We spent so much time, in fact, that it was right about when I captured this image (around 3pm) that I realized we still had a good 3 miles or so to get back to the climb, and another half mile or so up back to the parking area. And with the time change, sunset was at 5:30.
We packed it up and picked up the pace, hiking back with Bastian, a cool German dude we met during the day who's spending a few months traveling around the U.S. By the time we made it to the base of the hill, it was just after 5; and the sun was starting to set.
Fast forward about 20 minutes and the sky is absolutely blowing up, but I'm still making my way back to the car. Figuring I had no chance of shooting the sunset, I stopped a few times during the final stretch to the car to just admire the show. Well, turns out the colors were still lingering and Alan, Bastian and I drove to a turnout to try and get something worthwhile as the last of the colors faded. I didn't come away with anything real nice, but it was a fantastic ending to a great day (and an even better weekend).
Thanks Stephen, for bringing everyone together for such an awesome trip!

Kennet tripoid is a wonderful invention for nature photographers. In addition to normal photographical usage one can adjust it to ground level. This one is equipped with Manfrotto 3-dimensional videohead which is pretty essential for aiming the camera while the main bar is in what-ever angle.

This is a portable strobist flash setup for lighting a hockey arena. Of course you take a small risk that a puck/stick could damage it, but the risk in any one game is small. I used a simple manfrotto clamp, and made my own "Justin clamp" from a tiny camera tripod bought from a drugstore and a 1/4" bolt mounted through a hole I drilled in the clamp. A superclamp would have been a little more secure but less versatile. I used this setup for the hockey image titled "Panic" in my photostream. Next time I'll rig it with a safety cable and use a suspender strap for the battery pack.
