This exhibition, curated by Weave at Abertay, brings together emerging and established digital artists/activists whose work comments, reflects and challenges ideas relating to socio-political issues and events. It is a survey of media objects of protest against hostile acts and environments over the past 35 years.

How are digital artists using their practice to facilitate conversations around complex socio-political issues? How do we protest differently in a digital age?

It is a turbulent time across the globe – from the challenges of Brexit to the protests in Hong Kong, from the growing Climate Emergency movement to the rise in Nationalism — the international socio-political landscape is increasingly subject to crisis and change.

These events and activities, while tied to specific cultural and socio-political contexts, often transcend borders and speak to collective concerns for alternative forms of democracy and citizen-informed solutions to complex issues.

Digital devices and platforms have encouraged the public to engage more with social and political issues, expanding opportunities for citizens to directly participate in civil society action. Blogs, petition platforms, crowdfunding sites, e-voting and other online forums and tools offer new means for individuals to contribute to shaping political debate and driving ‘real-world’ change.

It is against this diverse backdrop of politics, and the participatory nature of digital technologies, that many artists are producing work today.

The exhibition reflects on gun culture through Joseph Delappe’s Elegy: GTA USA Gun Homicides and Addie Wagenknecht’s series The Liberator Vases of 3D printed vases made using the first open source downloadable handgun. Irene Tokini Fubara-Manuel’s videogame ‘Dreams of Disguise: Errantry’ we explore issues of agency at border control and in Tina Keane’s video installation we recognise women’s historical struggle against nuclear weapons at Greenham Common . Igor Vamos’ (Yes Men) Barbie Liberation Organization playfully challenges gender-norms and Echo Youth by Matthew Plummer-Fernandez frames physical protest for a digital era.

The title of the exhibition is inspired by Roxy Music’s song, ‘Re-make/Re-model’ and makes reference to musician and theorist Brian Eno’s perspectives on technology, society and the future.

In spite of her tragic life, I think Norma Jean had a good sense of humor, and was a lot smarter than she was ever given credit for. This little bit of wisdom for example...

Mooning and sighing will only get you so far. If you can't make a girl laugh - if you aren't having fun together, then what's the point, really.. Don't be afraid to break out the spatula, and chase her around the kitchen with it. Have some fun!

Thanks for looking!

We make a vow when Solstice comes, to find the Light in everyone, to keep the faith and bang the drum, on the longest night of the year. We press our faces to the glass, and see our little lives go past, and wave to shadows that we cast, on the longest night of the year. So I’ll keep you safe and hold you tight, and we’ll let the candle burn all night. Tomorrow we’ll welcome back the light, ‘twas the longest night of the year.

Happiest of Winter Solstices to one and all! ❄️

They say children are like snowflakes, each one is unique. The one-size-fits-all parenting style, thus, seems passé. Comprehending children’s psychology is paramount for every parent, but not easy. And the fact that every child is different and special makes the process even more complex and perplexing. At times, things could misfire as well, leading to a lifelong emotional disconnect between the child and the parents.

Dr. Deepak Raheja, a well-known child psychologist in Delhi, rightly points out, “Understanding a child’s thinking pattern, traits and personality is crucial on the part of parents in order to nurture the kid into an emotionally-balanced and healthy adult.”

According to Dr. Deepak Raheja, the three primary contexts that shape a child’s psychology perspective towards life are:

Social: A child’s relationship and comfort level with parents, siblings, relatives, teachers, or friends.

Cultural: The traditions, culture, values or guidelines put into practise in the house or in the society that a child grows in.

Socioeconomic:The lifestyle, class, financial backing and social status of the child’s family.

Dr. Deepak Raheja lists down a few simple psychology tips for parents to ensure their children’s right emotional and mental growth.

Observe your children:The key to understanding a child is to take interest in his or her choices, expressions, actions, temperament, and so on. Do not judge your kids, or compare them with other children else you may mistakenly end up sowing the seeds of inferiority complex in them.

Give your children the time they deserve:Ensure to make time for your children while you juggle between home and work. Spending quality time together with your kids is paramount to actually discover their personality. For this, you could try talking, playing, colouring, shopping, watching TV, or cooking their favourite dish with them.

Your undivided attention will make your children feel safe:Plan activities with them in a way that it enables you to dedicate a good amount of your time exclusively to them.

Keep a check on the environment your children are growing in: Everything, right from a child’s brain development and cognitive skills to attitude and language is largely shaped by the atmosphere and company around him.

Be a good listener to your kids: The best way to do that is to initiate a conversation on a topic of your children’s interest and get them talking. Listen attentively, while also paying attention to all the non-verbal cues like their expressions, body language or expressions.

Ask them open-ended questions: The right kind of questions will encourage them to think and express elaborately rather than a mere ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Practise the same if the children ask you a question in return.

Understand your children’s emotional quotient:Consider your kids as adults and never take their emotions or feelings for granted. Valuing children’s emotions and their capacity to handle sentiments is important.

Stop assuming and start asking: Make it a habit of talking to your children about how they feel or want things around them. For instance, just because a child isn’t complaining wouldn’t mean he or she is happy.

Dr Deepak Raheja states that minor behavioural issues, such as stubbornness or rudeness is common in kids and can be worked upon with the above mentioned tips. However, if not handled on time in an appropriate way, the problems may escalate into something as serious as childhood psychological disorders. It might include:

Eating disorder

Learning disability

Anxiety disorder

Schizophrenia

Disruptive behaviour disorder

Asperger’s syndrome

Depression and bipolar disorder

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

“Poor judgement and lack of awareness about the psychology of children can lead parents to take poor decisions that can affect their children severely.” says Dr. Deepak Raheja.

He further advises parents to seek help from skilled child psychologists before the situation worsens. Speaking to a specialist is always better than making wild guesses about children’s personality. If you, as a parent, feel the need to learn more tips to contribute to the development of your child’s conscience in the right manner, then get in touch with Dr. Deepak Raheja today.

The best psychiatrist in Delhi, Dr. Deepak Raheja reviews mental health, psychological or emotional problems cautiously. You could visit www.hopecareindia.com /and book an appointment with Dr. Deepak Raheja to adapt a realistic approach on raising a confident child.

What is the child psychology?

Child psychology is one of the many branches of psychology and one of the most frequently studied specialty areas. This particular branch focuses on the mind and behavior of children from prenatal development through adolescence.

What is child development in psychology?

A significant proportion of theories within this discipline focus upon development during childhood, as this is the period during an individual's lifespan when the most change occurs. Developmental psychologists study a wide range of theoretical areas, such as biological, social, emotion, and cognitive processes.

How can we communicate with children?

Let your kids know you're listening

When your children are talking about concerns, stop whatever you are doing and listen.

Express interest in what they are saying without being intrusive.

Listen to their point of view, even if it's difficult to hear.

Let them complete their point

before you respond.

How do you raise a child?

The five strategies to raise moral, caring children, according to Making Caring Common:

Make caring for others a priority.

Provide opportunities for children to practice caring and gratitude.

Expand your child's circle of concern.

Be a strong moral role model and mentor.

Guide children in managing destructive feelings.
