NCSU College of Design is at World Children's Festival at the National Mall in Washington DC this weekend (through Monday)... the Art+Design group is putting together flipbooks (custom Flash Applet) and digital comicbooks (Comiclife) for guests using real time color keying ala quasimondo.com.
The Lego team is right next door to us letting guests pariticipate in building a map of the nation block by block. Check out attached image attached. They have 5,000 more 10"x10" blocks to go, so come on down...

At this month's Open MAKE: Tools event, visitors were invited to explore their own creativity with our four Featured Makers from around the Bay Area, who shared their art, ingenuity, and techniques.
Guests made needle-felted creatures with Moxie, created three-dimensional shapes by sewing sheets of fabric together with Judy Castro, fused plastic with clothes irons, used sewing needles and conductive thread to make circuits embedded in bracelets and badges, and used motors and other tools to take Light Painting to a whole new level.

Make/Craft display at Weirdstuff. It had been sprawling over a second display shelf-- and was that much more impressive-- before they saw me coming with the camera.
Make no mistake, this is a wild coyote, I came across this guy over a year ago on the foot path in Inglewood. He was a regular there (have other photos of him) but this time we happened to cross paths really close, at first about 10 feet away, had to move back to get him all in. He had no fear of me and even laid down for a scratch and a growl. He was the biggest male coyote I have seen or have seen since, and his no fear of us humans probably got him into trouble as I have not seen him in a very long time. He was a bit beaten up looking, I thought he was an older coyote, just look at that tail. But his teeth & gums were perfect, no age signs there.. I popped off 77 shots of him in all kinds of poses, here are three of them.

WHAT TO TAKE
With 3 days to go until I leave for Lake Mungo I am starting to think about what to take.
This was a pic I took on a past journey. When I am a loaded and successful photographer sponsored by Toyota (hint hint) i might have a nice new shiny 4WD with roof racks and all sorts of flash sleeping gear. But for now I have to make do with the trusty golf (I love this car) to take me and my stuff.
One of the things about heading into the remote locations I do, is that accomodation is often miles from where I am. And of course we are shooting all night, so sleep occurs for a few hours in the morning (more on this later).
So I sleep in the Golf, I carry all of my gear, food and clothes in the Golf. I love this car. But it does mean I have to think about what I take. I have a lot of gear this trip. I have some new timelapse rigs, camera dollys, and will need to take lots of warm stuff as it will be FREEZING up at the lake.
I will be showing all of the gear I am taking in detail in a post. But I am starting to think about it tonight.
I am off to my studio in about an hour to see what I need, and will be bringing it home to sort.
Tonight I am also looking closely at the weather as it starts to get pretty accurate this close.
I am also considering leaving a day earlier than original, as I got some exciting news today about lake mungo that I will share later.
YEAH! I love the Ball of Light.

Cienega Bridge, Pima County (far from any populated area), Arizona.
Now, don't get me wrong; this is almost certainly a fine bridge. It has done its job for nearly 100 years. What more could be expected of it?
However, I have to ask... Why is it listed in the National Register of Historic Places? (Is a bridge even a place?)
It rates exactly two sentences in its Wikipedia article, which, although mentioning the National Register, doesn't say why it was so recognized.
As far as I can tell, it's not especially notable in terms of length, height, innovation or design. It didn't connect two places that were previously isolated, or even important. (While we may have visited at a "slow" time, it's hard to believe that this bridge carries much more than eight or ten vehicles a day; it's pretty remote here.) It spans a CREEK, which is often dry, not the mighty Mississippi.
Was it honored because of its age at the time? Is 67 years a remarkably long time for a bridge to be useful? (By coincidence, that's my count at present. Should I expect some sort of longevity award?)
Let's face it; it's not remindful of the Golden Gate or Brooklyn. It's a bridge, not an icon.
The scenic Rincon Mountains (which are not, as far as I'm aware, listed in the National Register of Historic Places even though they are probably more than 67 years old) are in the distance.

Using strategically placed bits of coffee stirrer stick, I was able to endow the excavator with a fully articulated boom, dipper stick, and bucket. Next time I'll see about making the body swivel over the tracks.
Another quick test fitting of the y-axis table. The sleeve bearings with the cut guide rods and braces in place. All seems to slide nice and smooth.
The blank for the x-z-axis is visible in the background.
The tolerances are pretty tight, here, and I'm worried I might get glue where it's not suppose to be!
