Should prostitutes be fined and if so how much? It probably depends upon whether you are East Asian or Western.

That was the question that Travis Proulx and Steven Heine (2006) asked subjects in a variety of experiment conditions designed to test their "Meaning Maintenance Model"

Terror Management Theory demonstrates that subjects who have been encouraged to think about their own death tend to want to think that they themselves and the culture to which they belong is "good." In this way, subjects in a "mortality salience" condition atttempt to obtain a degree of "symbolic immortality" - that their name will live on. It is also found that subjects in the mortality salience condition are more severe in their disaproval of critics and those that behave in ways typically considered to be immoral, such as prostitutes. Specifically, when faced with death, subjects are found to fine prostitutes more heavily.

Proulx and Heine (2006) adapted and advanced this theory to argue that it is not death itself that encourages us to cling to symbols and meanings, but the absense of meaning itself. They argue that humans are simply motivate to maintain a sense of meaning and order to their lives. In their novel experiments they found that people faced with experiences that threaten their meaning-frameworks, such as the above image, behaved in the same way as those encouraged to think about their death, including being more severe with prostitutes.

The above image shows the colours of the trumps (hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades) reversed. Looking at the image you should feel that something is wrong, that meaning is not being maintained.

Before taking the Grandkids home for the start of the new school year.

Our late winter break in Tenerife was a bit different this year. The weather was forecast to break the day we arrived – and it did! Rain wasn’t the problem it was gale force winds – the same winds that caused the dust storms in Africa that caused the pollution and sand in the UK. We have witnessed gales in Tenerife before but this was worse than we’d seen it in the past . The palm trees were bending, the sand drifting like snow and the sea was raging. We usually walk around 150 miles on a ten day break but for five days we just walked with a brief spell on the beach, then the gales came back. We covered 22 miles some days and totalled 192 miles, not bad for a beach holiday. In some of the photos it looks stunning but look at the tops of the palm trees, like inside out umbrellas, the beach beds are empty and the waves were up to ten feet high and smashing thirty feet in the air. For five days everyone stood taking photos of the sea. For two days all boats stayed in harbour, only the big ferries sailed, there wasn’t a thing at sea, not even the surfers, we’ve never known that happen before. To add to this jellyfish in their hundred were washing up on shore and there was a severe risk of a burn from them. Even when red flags were flying and flags warning about the jellyfish were up the occasional nutter would go in the water and some people took staggering risks with their children including one couple with a baby, dangling it over the waves, just to get a photo, playing chicken as monster waves crashed in.

One day I had to catch my club sandwich as it went flying from my plate in the wind, empty glasses slid off the table and seat cushions went cartwheeling down the pavement. A couple of days were dull and cool but the menacing clouds made impressive photos, the sea was like a boiling cauldron. We did have days of beautiful weather as well, the second half of the holiday was normal sunny Tenerife. I haven’t hired a car for ages on Tenerife, it adds a degree of hassle to – what is supposed to be – a sun and relax holiday so again we didn’t go up El Teide. Next time perhaps. I took my racing bike once just to cycle from sea level to 8000 feet nonstop – twice! it’s a seventy mile round trip and a long drag to the top. On the way home we had to make an emergency landing in Dublin, fire tenders with foam jets pointing at us, unfortunately I was facing the setting sun and couldn’t take photos as the sun was shining straight through the window. Seven and a half hours on the plane, not much fun.

Sawn frames for the batela are sorted on top of the lofting for the boat.

The Batela is a traditional Venetian boat, that is, developed in the Italian city of Venice. It is a flat-bottomed boat with a slight degree of rocker (meaning, the bottom is curved from bow to stern) to make it easier to row and control. Rowed standing up, it is essentially a cargo carrier or ferry.

The Traditional Small Craft class of 2014 under the direction of Master Instructor Jeff Hammond will build the boat.

The batela is approximately 30 feet long, and will be built largely of western red cedar over sawn frames.

This is an extremely interesting commission in that the boat was developed using design input provided by the owner in the form of sketches and commentary accompanied by video of Venetian batelae. Jeff drew the boat using that data, and refined it based on additional commentary and guidance to meet the owner's direction.

A good picture of a classic Venetian batela can be seen here: tinyurl.com/kvnnvyj on the webpage of Row Venice. There are more pictures at rowvenice.org/whos-row-venice/

Bradwell Power Station, Essex UK, opened in 1962 and ceased generating in 2002. Since then it has been slowly decommisioned. This task will finally cease in 2085 - at the earliest!!!!

Apparently the reactor is still cooling down!

What did they say all those years ago? Nuclear power will make electricity so cheap they will be able to give it away.....

Came out beautiful, reclaimed wood top (built by us) and reused cast iron legs, from the sinks, from a 19-teens former unwed mothers and children's home in Buffalo NY. (a side note: Why was there no home for unwed fathers?...where were they in this situation?...perhaps the Erie County Jail? Maybe a laundry where they could work off their immorality like the ladies might have been apporpriate?)

In our shop at ReUse Action (Reuseaction.com) we fabricate slabs out of the barn beams and building materials we collect from salvage, deconstruction and demolition jobs.

In this project we re-sawed old growth, 3x8 barn joists from Bath NY. They are beautiful old growth southern yellow pine that was cut down in the 1870s-1880s and was hundreds of years old at that time. These trees probably predated the American Revolution. I count about 120 rings per 8 inches!

The slab was built and finished with satin, water-based polyurethane. Nail holes, checks and divots were filled to a high level of finish with West System, clear epoxy. One can see to the bottom of the holes.

The cast iron base was reclaimed from a bathroom of the former unwed mothers and children's house on Harvard Place in Buffalo. It was built in the 19-teens and these legs were ganged together and held up back to back cast iron sinks. We stripped them and repainted them with satin enamel and dry brushed them with pewter paint to highlight the graininess and the embossed letters and other interesting details from the casting.

The distance between the legs was shortened and the threaded rods were shortened and re-threaded to match the length of the table. Matching feet were made and added to the bottom of the legs and levelers were added. The old square head nuts and bolts were saved, cleaned and re-used to preserve the original look.

It is on display in our store and available for $950 in the store. We bases to make 2 more of these, to any length and custom widths and other wood tops. See reuseaction.com

Incase you didn't know, we added a new option to our last preorder wigs. A Make it FULL option. It means that we pack the wig with more fibre, resulting in a thick, luxurious wig. Its a little more expensive but on longer cuts, definitely worth it if you're into styling!

ℹ️ You can use a hair dryer (Or others) for the drying step of the paper.

⚠️ Not strong and not close to the paper so as not to tear the paper.

⚠️ Not hot so as not to wrinkle the paper

⚠️ If you dry the paper with a hair dryer (Or others). Wait at least 5 minutes, so that the paper is completely impregnated with coffee.

ℹ️ Go generously on the coffee so you do not have to do both odds. If not, simply do step 2 on both sides.

ℹ️ Do not pour hot coffee on the paper. Wait until it cools to reach room temperature at the room where you are.

ℹ️ Drying varies depending on the humidity of the medium on which your paper is dried and the number of coffe you pour on the paper. It takes between 2 and 12 hours maximum to have a completely dry paper.

⚠️ Pay attention to hair, dust ... etc. This can disturb the impregnation of coffee.

Wandering around the meadows tonight we watched the Make Poverty history team start to erect a truly enormous series of letters (this is the 'o' of 'poverty' I think) spelling out the slogan along about a hundred meters. I went by at about 11:00pm and they didn't have anything up yet. Here's hoping they get it done within the next twelve hours!

Makes you just want to give it a big hug - Ouch!
