SLR 393 makes it way through central Oxford, ME along Route 26. This area has several auto mechanic shops and shopping centers to service the Oxford Hills region, as the train next would wind it's way through Norway and South Paris. While I continued all the way along through, admittedly it's been almost 15 years since I've chased a train beyond this point, so a few spots were missed opportunities, whereas I had gotten probably too far in front of the train. But alas, I can't be bashful of the results, it was a good day!
We were following a pair of juveniles and had paused before we got to the slough, as there was another group already near them. Next thing we knew, Crimp Ear (what the guides call her), came flying along the bank. We heard a big splash - the juveniles had jumped into the slough and scattered.
The guides think the juveniles were her cubs from 2 years ago, and she was trying to drive them further out of the territory.
If you are wondering, we did move back when we saw her approach. She was totally ignoring us!

Yesterday was a perfect day to return to the botanic gardens. Met a couple friends there and spent about an hour or so in the butterfly pavilion, then made our way over to the Japanese garden area.
I'm always amazed at the colors that are present no matter the season. This place always makes me feel better.
I hadn't been back since May when I watched the fellows from Japan pruning the trees.

At 11 am 19th of December 2011, Indy was put to sleep, I was with him to the end keeping the promises I made to him on his first day with me. I told him he would never have a moment when he didn’t know he was loved, he would live a life as free as possible and I would be there at the end.
Despite their squat, comical appearance, Atlantic puffins are accomplished fliers. One particular impressive ability they have is to land backwards. When the wind is at their back the birds will hover and then briefly fly backwards onto the cliff.
In this photo you can see one puffin executing this maneuver forcing another puffin out of the way.
I took this photo on Grimsey Island which has one of the largest puffin colonies in Iceland.

Ever have a snow globe as a kid? Did your parents tell you to make a wish before shaking it? Last week, thousands of gulls gathered at the mouth of the Dungeness River at low tide. When Bald Eagles flew thru, gulls flushed creating this magical snow globe like scene. I first tried to video record from an observation tower near the beach but realized I wanted more of a drone like video. Since I don't have a drone, I moved to the bluff for a different POV. It took several tries and waiting patiently for Eagles to make their rounds. I couldn't have asked for better weather conditions. Sometimes you get lucky--right place, right time.
Here is a great article about California gull migration to Washington and Clallam County by local expert and naturalist Bob Boekelheide . You will be amazed at the number of CA Gulls who migrate here and the distance they fly.

Well I only made it to Brownville Junction one time and it only was for a couple hours but I was blessed with a train and it was a good one in my opinion. Sm eastbound is getting ready to roll with 4719, 4727, 8767 and 8756 with 91 cars on May 8, 1981.
It is like a totally fresh custom for Volos city, the day after Christmas, to light up the sky with lots of colourful lanterns. This whole thing is about a good cause in the first place, as "making a wish" aids children institutions, with the revenue of the lanterns.

37668 makes it's way south on a hazy afternoon at Red Bank with a lengthy 6K05 Carlisle - Crewe Basford Hall 16/07/03.

The day was designed around a visit to Whiteford Lighthouse, as I had seen a few images on line and decided that it would make a nice change from the typical rugged rock and cliff faces that I had been taking around the Pembrokeshire coastline for the most part of the earlier part of the week.
Its location also afforded me a nice easy walk to it. All I needed was to check the tides to ensure the waters were far enough out to give be time to take a shot or three and make my way back to shore. The weather was OK, a little nippy if I stood around too long, but generally dry-ish, but with heavy and dark clouds.
I admit I struggled a little to make the capture interesting, it was all so very mid tone grey. It was starting to get a little late and I was on my return to the shore when the faintest hint of sunlight gave a subtle glow to the sky and just the merest hint of this sunlight touched the curved lighthouse walls.
Even so I was not hopeful that I had anything worth my time in Light room.
I’ve simply enhanced a bit of front light to the lighthouse itself, as it was mainly in silhouette (I had bracketed to compensate for this and glad I did). Then I’ve cropped to make what I hope is an interesting image and added some warmth through the radial filter and white balance slider. Not much else really except a boost to the saturation. I think the polariser I had use to minimise reflections of the foreground rock pools gave a blue colour cast, but I think this added something overall.
The final image I hope sums up the lone feeling of this metal structure. Remarkable to think this is an Iron structure that at high tide sits actually in (rather than above) some rather tumultuous seas and has done so now since it was construction is 1865.
For those interested it is 44 ft tall.
