We were following a pair of juveniles and had paused before we got to the slough, as there was another group already near them. Next thing we knew, Crimp Ear (what the guides call her), came flying along the bank. We heard a big splash - the juveniles had jumped into the slough and scattered.
The guides think the juveniles were her cubs from 2 years ago, and she was trying to drive them further out of the territory.
If you are wondering, we did move back when we saw her approach. She was totally ignoring us!

My entry to Bio-Cup 2021 Round 1. The theme was Media and Entertainment, with my subtheme being Music.
I’ve wanted to do a Crystal King revamp for a really long time, and such a terrible pun gave me a great opportunity to do so. I knew right from the start that I just had to give him a little crystal mohawk, with the leather jacket and speaker being added later on as I explored the concept. When I finished, he did end up being rather top heavy due to the guitar, so I attached one of those old 6x2x2 weighted bricks to his back, which surprisingly solved the issue.

It is like a totally fresh custom for Volos city, the day after Christmas, to light up the sky with lots of colourful lanterns. This whole thing is about a good cause in the first place, as "making a wish" aids children institutions, with the revenue of the lanterns.

What makes the Black-capped Vireo so special? It’s limited range makes it highly sought after in the birding community. People travel from all over the world to catch a glimpse of this magnificent bird during breeding season. It’s range is limited to West Texas north to just over the Oklahoma state line spending winters in Southwest Mexico - a short migration when compared to many other species. A solid black helmet and white spectacles make identification is easy. It is not difficult to find if you go to the right place. South Llano River State Park is an excellent location to find this bird.

You can see an adult crocodile nearby. A bull hippo seems to be checking it out to make sure it stays far away from the hippos. Hippos generally dominate the crocodiles as a hippo's massive size and powerful jaws (capable of biting a croc in half) usually deter or defeat them, especially when protecting young or territory. While hippos are herbivores, their aggression and unpredictable nature make them extremely dangerous, often chasing or even killing crocodiles that get too close, creating tense but often decisive confrontations.
One of the hippos blows up a spray of water. They blow a spray of water from their nostrils as a normal part of their respiratory process when resurfacing for air. This action is a result of their nostrils and the anatomy that is similar to a whale's blowhole.
Hippos are highly aggressive and territorial. Males often fight, sometimes to the death, and they are known to react violently to intruders in their territory, including humans in boats.
Hippos are important to the aquatic ecosystems they live in. They can help maintain river channels, moving soil and modifying the underwater landscape, helping to create complex habitats that support numerous other species.
Hippos cause an estimated 500 human deaths per year in Africa, making them one of the world's deadliest large land mammals.
Hippos live a semi-aquatic life in rivers and lakes across sub-Saharan Africa, spending their days in the water to protect their sensitive skin and coming out at night to graze on large amounts of grass.
They are social animals living in groups and can live for 35–50 years in the wild, with individuals in captivity often reaching older ages.
Hippos do not swim but walk or run along the bottom of waterways, using a reflex to surface and breathe without waking up.
They do not float in water because of their high bone density.
Their eyes, ears, and nostrils are on top of their heads, allowing them to see, hear, and breathe while most of their body is submerged. They can hold their breath for up to five minutes

While hippos rest near each other in the water, grazing is a solitary activity and hippos are not territorial on land. The hippo is among the most dangerous animals in the world as it is highly aggressive and unpredictable. They are threatened by habitat loss and poaching for their meat and ivory canine teeth.

Together with my husband, our combined love of antiques has affected our lives today. My husband has been a collector of antique pharmacy and poison bottles for over 35 years. My eye goes to many things, from rustic wooden boxes to colourful vintage cameras. I just love that vintage, once loved and worn look and feel. We enjoy scouring antique shops, auctions and junk shops, looking for our next treasure! These colourful window bottles in an antique shop caught my eye but no treasures were purchased that day. The search goes on!
