WC view from rebuilt GP35 (4005) on "Explorers" special to White Pine. Once we got to Bergland, we left what had been the mainline of the DSS&A and headed north on what had been the branch to White Pine for them. This was 14 miles of track heading north into the bush (just about all of this area is "the bush") that had been built in 1953 in response to an expansion of the copper mine at White Pine. It had been there since the 1850's but I recall the Korean War had made the Federal government anxious about our supply of copper. I'm sure they funded the building of this part of the DSS&A. One of the landmarks was that large rock behind us; I was told that it was used to help recovering raptors to fly. It certainly stood out above the woods here.
