a second look at 46100 royal scot and 70000 britannia at nantwich

Just another from this morning out on this great little shortline.

With two classic GE four motor units for power, the diminutive Fore River Transportation Co. is a delightful little gem of a railroad and a throwback to 1990s New England Railroading. Despite being only 2 1/2 miles long the little pike manages to offer a few really nice photo angles and is always worthy of a morning trackside.

Having begun their day pulling outbound cars from Twin Rivers, the crew then did a bit of switching to build their outbound train for interchange with CSXT in Braintree yard. After the crew took a short break, FRVT B23-7 101 blt Jul. 1979 as Conrail 1992) headed out on their short mainline run down to the junction with the MBTA/Keolis Greenbush Branch at Shipyard interlocking. They are seen here passing the 750 ft long siding/runaround as they approach the Adams Street crossing and the junction with the 'T' mainline is just under a thousand feet behind me around the curve.

Fore River Railroad is the underlying owner of the railroad and holds the common carrier obligations for the line, but operation of it is contracted out. In the late 80s and through the 90s the line was operated by the Quincy Bay Terminal, an affiliate of New Hampshire's New England Southern, but in 2000 FRVT took over. FRVT is a Class III railroad owned by its largest customer, Twin Rivers Technology LLC, a manufacturer of industrial inorganic chemicals (rendering of glycerin, fatty acids). Twin Rivers purchased the former Proctor & Gamble soap plant in 1994 and in 2007 the company was purchased by FGV a Malaysian Global Agribusiness company that was originally and arm of the Malaysian government agency FELDA but was taken public in 2012.

Looking west along the Erie Mining Company-built mainline at Murphy station at Murphy City, Minnesota. Murphy City was constructed by the mining company as a maintenance section crew base complete with a small neighborhood on the east side of Minnesota Highway 1. On the west wide, the section buildings cluster off of a rails spur visible to the right. Fascinating to walk around this area and see what evidence remains years after the last train plied the rails. Steve Glischinski shot a loaded taconite train heading to Taconite Harbor here in 1975. The original station sign was replaced and the plants have had plenty of time to mature. See below for his photo from this location.

In August I made a short trip to Czech republic for my birthday, mostly in Prague with some friends but with two railfan days tacked on at the end. In hindsight it was a mistake as I should have used the days for more Switzerland, but live and don't learn. I was in Jindřichův Hradec to ride the NG but was surprised to find that the standard gauge was quite interesting too. Here a local arrives at Jindřichův Hradec station where the train will terminate.

sometimes , in the early '60s , the distant , different sound of a britannia whistle as compared with the usual stanier hooter would result in one of the regular group of spotters calling out "that's a brit's whistle "--here that sound is heard again as britannia returns to the main lines on a crewe -shrewsbury test run

it was also a pleasure much missed in the pandemic , to meet and talk to friends by the lineside without masks or distancing whilst waiting for a train to appear !

As from today (18th August 2019) East Midlands Trains is no more, as Abellios 'East Midlands Railway' now has the franchise. Before either of these operators, Midland Mainline were running things, and here back in 2006, we see 222009 (then a 4 car set) at a different looking Harrowden Junction,

The backlog has been so large for so long that I haven't put up anything from the archives for a long time. I figured Thanksgiving is as good a time as any for a lookback. I dipped into the folder of scans done for my book.

There are a number of scans that I thought were a shoe-in but didn't make the final cut once the hard choices had to be made.

The WC was down to a little over a week of independence left in its existence. Train OACTI is making the run west from Sault Ste. Marie to Gladstone over the Soo Line mainline. Most of the train is empty steel hoppers used to shuttle iron ore pellets between the Tilden Mine and Algoma Steel in the Canadian Soo.

The old feed mill at Engadine, MI makes a fine prop. Thanks to a Google visit I confirmed that the mill is still there 24 years later, unfortunately the evergreens seen on this side of the mill are now huge and pretty much completely obscure it from view.

NS 344 usually originates out of NS Homestead yard and runs via the Toledo District to Bellevue. On this day however a local job brought a solid block of Bellevues up from Maumee and a road crew was put on at Sumner St yard with a 344 symbol. It took them most of the afternoon before they finally got out at 287 which placed them right at sunset at Vickers but catching one of the remaining 5 high hood SD40's leading a road freight on the Chicago main was well worth a shot. 12/16/17
