a closer view as 70000 Britannia approaches bunbury lane with its crewe-shrewsbury training run

I do not usually share digitally manipulated images created for my own 'consumption' but I feel that this one deserves an 'airing' and quite possibly could be the only opportunity that I will ever get in perfect winter conditions to recreate a scene as close as possible to that witnessed over half a century ago and more, thanks to the wonders of modern technology. Standing on the 'hallowed ground' of the 'mound' at Shap Wells, only made possible by recent tree-felling, 45690 'Leander' is seen tackling the relentless 1 in 75 climb to Shap summit heading the 1Z45 07:14 Manchester Victoria to Carlisle 'Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express' on Saturday 21st January 2017.

It's cold, windy, and severe clear on a gorgeous December morning in the Boston area. Pan Am local BO-1 with the mysterious and popular Guilford repainted GP40-2LW 507 is shoving 10 cars east on the Draw 7 bridge crossing the Mystic River from Somerville into Everett. This is MP 2.22 on the former Boston and Maine now MBTA/Keolis Eastern Route mainline.

The outer two carriages are being used as 'barrier coaches' and will not be scrapped yet. The inner seven carriages were formerly HST Trailers and buffet cars, used by Virgin / East Coast, before serving their final working days on the Midland Mainline. The two barriers are ex Greater Anglia.

Stored/retired classic GMD power sits in the deadline adjacent to CSX's Kanawha Subdivision in Huntington. In our short 15 minutes here, we saw 4 loaded coal trains sail past the deadline. In this exposure the headlight of an E/B can be seen as a W/B lights up the deadline on their way towards Russell.

class 5 4-6-0 45231 sherwood forester leaves a trail of smoke approaching winsford heading to carnforth on a test run

in the past large parts of cheshire were designated royal hunting forest and in early medieval times maintained their own harsh forest laws which forbade locals to hunt anything there , sometimes on pain of death

from the 17th century , the important title of master forester was held by members of the Done family from nearby utkinton hall--so the forester name is quite appropriate for the location

Former Canada Atlantic Railway roadbed sit, under unused 130lbs jointed rails, at the interchange point between CN and CSX at Cecile. The former Valleyfield subdivision was torn down in stage, starting a couple of mile west of Cantic, toward a point about a mile behind 538's power in this picture. The westernmost 10 miles were kept in use in order to access the CIL and CEZ Spurs along with Valleyfield wharf who guaranteed two daily local jobs out of Coteau in order to serve them.

With the abandonment of the Ste-Martine Spur, branching off the Massena subdivision at Ste-Martine and extending for about five miles toward Beauharnois, the decision was made to change the interchange point between Conrail-now CSX- and to use the dormant eastern dead-end section where once the Valleyfield subdivision stand.

L538 was the assigned job who's spot and pull the Cecile interchange on a daily basis. Illinois Central GP38-2 9628, assigned to Eastern Canada since a while, help breaking the monotony of CN's fleet of four-axels low-power units.

Where once thru freight from New-England and Central Vermont Railway along with passenger trains going to Canada's capital once passed at 50 miles-per-hour, there's about a mile of rusty rails left before only ballast on the ground could tell there's once a railway standing there.

Mainline-liveried 37798 positively stands out in the grim and wet conditions at South Bank on 26th April 2001 on a trip-working transferring empty steel flats from Lackenby to Tees Yard. The pigeons on the pipe-run clearly appreciate the classic traction, an unusual Teesside visitor by this time. The public right of way on the right is part of the Teesdale Way long distance walking route. A fresh load of quenched and steaming coke can be seen on the left, the works now sadly having fallen silent with the closure of Redcar steelworks.

NJT F40PH-2CAT #4120 whisks Mainline train 1729 through the Hackensack Meadowlands at Valley Brook Road in Lyndhurst in some crisp evening sun. While the F40s have had a return to the limelight since late 2020, its hard to know how much longer they have left.

A Cross Country Class 220 Voyager crosses the BCN Old Mainline (Wednesbury Oak Loop), Coseley. The service is 1M34 1037 Oxford to Manchester Piccadilly.

With the camera on the rail, we're looking west down the Santa Fe mainline toward to the San Joaquin River. We're about midway through the Figarden siding and it's a bit strange that there are intermediate signals here for the siding, but then it was a long siding and could accommodate two trains. Surrounding the siding on both sides are fig orchards, hence the name. This site is north of Fresno between the city and the San Joaquin River. Today houses surround this location.

I strangely have very little coverage along the 15 mile stretch of CSXT's ex Boston and Albany main between Palmer and Springfield, so finally decided to try out a few new (for me) spots on this gray Friday.

CSXT West Springfield based local L038 is a Mon-Fri local on duty at 1030 that handles work on the mainline as well as the Athol Industrial Track and other chores in the Springfield area. I'd never made the effort to photograph it before despite spending time hunting down nearly every other local freight job CSXT operates in New England. After running east with a healthy train, they dropped their cars on Main 1 and then made a 'big runaround' west via Main 2 between CP 92 and CP96 on the Berkshire Sub. Having pulled and spotted the Sulco Warehouse to the east they have now moved west on Main 1 and dropped their train and cut away to head into the other Sulco Warehouse just east of the Roosevelt Ave. overpass at about MP 95.1 from where this was captured.

The pair of 6200 series GP40-2s of Chessie System heritage are the standard power on all New England locals these days, but in my youth these jobs that prowled industries, yards, and branchlines were exclusively the domain of Conrail blue B23-7s.
