At 0724hrs on Monday 12 June 2023, Class 390 'Pendolino' set no. 390135 of Avanti West Coast approaches Sandbach station in Cheshire. This train was 1R21, the Manchester Piccadilly (0655hrs) to London Euston service.

The previous evening, Sandbach had experienced torrential thunderstorms. On this morning some local roads were blocked by floodwaters. This dampness, together with high temperatures, led to a thick miasma enveloping the station area and drastically reducing light levels. Whilst I have added an element of artistic processing to this image, the scene is not that far from what I witnessed when taking this shot.

Usually you have get off the mainlines to find the magic of railroading these days, but not on this day. My kids are enjoying what I hope is a lifelong memory, watching the "queen of steam" passing through town with a fire in her belly and steam coming out her whistle.

Norfolk & Western No. 611 was on it's way from Roanoke, VA to Strasburg, PA for repairs and excursion service through Amish country. The timing was right, running up the Cumberland Valley after the kids got out of school, giving them a chance to experience some mainline magic.

A morning Utah Railway Intermountain Power empty heads for the WildCat Load-Out. This was the last active coal loading facility on the Utah Railway mainline. The load-out closed in 2015. There was oil loading going on at the load-out location, this too has ceased. Sad times on the Utah Railway.....
