This is a photo of a series that originated during the last night of our visit to Tromsø, Norway.
The aurora forcast for that last night was very promising, but unfortunately the sky was overcast and the hourly forecast didn't predict clear sight until midnight. Thrilled about the amazing northern lights we already saw the nights before, we wanted to try our luck again and see it one more time. So we went out around midnight to hunt the aurora at one of our favorite places and yes the sky really cleared up. We wished the aurora forecast would come true, but far and wide no aurora borealis in sight. After more than three hours of waiting and changing locations now and then to warm a bit up in our car, we just saw once a small green shimmer at the horizon. A bit disappointed we decided to head back to Tromsø. We stopped again at our last favourite place on the route back to wait one more time for the aurora.
And then - finally - around four o'clock in the morning the aurora started to appear, weaker and stronger phases alternated. And then as if someone pushed the button: the aurora was so vibrant and fast changing, much stronger than what we experienced the nights before. I was so excited and overwhelmed by the beauty and intense of that spectacle, I nearly forgot to point the lens up into the sky and try to capture this phenomenon of nature. Then after about 45 minutes it started to slow down again and after a while we decided to head back to Tromsø, extremely satisfied with what we experienced, and well knowing how very lucky we were that night. Back in Tromsø there was time left for a two hour nap before we had to catch our flight back home.
Man, that was worth every minute of wait and chill!
See more northern light impressions in my Aurora Borealis Album, hope you enjoy!
reminds me of something out of Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory....unfortunately there not chocolate gum drops like in the film.
I used a purple filter on this, not sure if its a bit too purple but I like the dreamy effect it gives!
haven't used this lens in a while but i really should use it more often.
School have not been going easy on me, my light reading for the night was the birth of the Nazi's. Interesting but very heavy and sad. I've always had a childhood fascination with Anne Frank and the holocaust, and have read the diary several times and visited the museum. So it is very interesting to find out how it started!
On another not i'm thinking of getting the lens baby spark? does anyone have one?

It finally came! I love it, and highly recommend it.
I haven't done a Photo of the Day in a while, and will continue back up as soon as I get more time.

From a visit to the Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory & Gardens.
Just got back last night from a 7 day Caribbean cruise aboard the Disney Magic.
This is a shot of one of the smoke stacks on the top deck of the ship. It was a downright gorgeous day. We just boarded the ship so there was hardly anyone around yet.
About time for another William upload, he currently thinks that he can turn the lights on and off by blowing at them, i think we have a mischievous grandparent to thank for that little 'magic' trick :) but it made for a great photo opportunity and makes us laugh so i'm not complaining.
Taken with the 50mm at f1.8 to create the shallow dof i was after, also took another frame with just the hand in focus but this one conveys 'magic' more to me. Quite high ISO (1600) and relatively slow shutter speed (1/160) as it was dark except for the one electric light overhead.
Got rubbish internet connection this morning, lots of wind and rain here overnight and it looks like some gremlins have got in the system, might not be around much till thats sorted.

This is intentionally slightly overexposed. I like the bright look of the storefronts.
*Magic Hour:
It is another name for twilight. It is that time just before and just after sundown, when the day changes to night. Many like the magic hour because it is usually accompanied by pretty sunsets, with pink and blue hues filling the sky.

It seemed just a common pink flower. But when I looked at it carefully, I discovered a magic little world with multiple colors.

The Magic Island Sphinx, Houston, TX. In 1984, Houston became home to the second Magic Island. A movie producer named Michael Callie had started the original club in Newport Beach, California. The business and concept were sold to Robert Albo, team doctor for the Oakland Raiders and the Golden State Warriors, and his partner Terry Giles of Grand Illusion Enterprises Inc. Albo was a dedicated magic fan with a vast collection of posters and magic accoutrements, many of which ended up in the Houston location. The building was filled with secret passageways and hidden corners. In its earliest days, patrons would enter by inserting a special card into the mouth of a golden cobra statue in the lobby. That opened a set of sliding doors, which led to a glass elevator that passed by all manner of tomb-like decorations.
Special thanks @anomalicious
Took the great chance again today and went into the forest in my waders. It was really fun. Walking through the deepest puddle I could find, without getting wet - like a bit of magic though it is not.
An iPhone 4 with TrueHDR and Instagram and a final tweak in Picnik. Mahalo to everyone who has left comments and invites on this photo within the first 24 hours. Aloha!
I went a little crazy with these sunset shots because it had been ages since I landed such a beautiful magic hour without having to rush off somewhere..the hotel we were staying at was also situated at the perfect vantage point so really all I had to do what stand and shoot..with a tripod as it helped keep my ISO low..
