After 20+ hours of driving from Michigan to Montana, myself and fellow photographer Michael Nowakowski finally made it to Montana. Rather than go to our hotel in Missoula immediately, we made stops in Billings and Laurel. While in Laurel, we lucked into a departing Laurel - Missoula mixed freight in great light. We gave chase, stopping in various spots along the way. Our last spot we "wanted" to get for the day was from atop Bozeman Tunnel. we got to the spot, and waited for the train to cut on its helpers and arrive. The delay was much longer than anticipated and while waiting, clouds started rolling it, the word "discouraged" doesn't describe my feelings well enough. However, in a moment of luck that is usually only found in sports movies, an opening of about 5 minutes came from the clouds, and like the convenient plot twist, the train popped around the corner into sight, and into the brief moment of sunlight that warmed the whole valley again just as the train was ready to enter the tunnel.

My dad, a week after he got out of the hospital for cancer surgery. He wasn't much for walking around, but whenever he went into the yard, he always seemed to find four-leaf clovers. He came up with four within four days.

Taken this morning at the crack of dawn.

We used to say this moon was good luck because it was facing up and wouldn't spill the good luck.

Well if ladybugs represent good luck then we should be very lucky in this house! Late last week we were overtaken by ladybugs. You literally could not take a step on the front lawn without fear of stepping on one! Not sure where they came from but it only lasted a couple of days. Needless to say my son & I were out there snapping away with the cameras...to anyone driving by it must have looked pretty strange...2 people perched in the grass with cameras apparently photographing the lawn!

What a cold and lovely day.........

not easy to photograph

We were actually heading back when Priscilla exclaimed excitedly that we should stop at the next available spot. This was our fifth night and we had agree upon that we wouldn't stop the car to shoot the aurora if it was weak, so I knew it must be something huge for her to ask me to pull over.

Thankfully, we managed to find an empty jetty to view the amazing show and it was the best display from our trip!

We probably would not have caught this had our car not crashed into the ditch, causing us to wait for an hour in a stranger's cabin for the tractor man to come and save us, and hence delaying our hunt for night. So I guess every cloud has a silver lining!

Omikuji

Omikuji (御御籤, 御神籤, or おみくじ) are random fortunes written on strips of paper at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples in Japan.

The omikuji predicts the person's chances of his or her hopes coming true, of finding a good match, or generally matters of health, fortune, life, etc. When the prediction is bad, it is a custom to fold up the strip of paper and attach it to a pine tree in the temple grounds. A purported reason for this custom is a pun on the word for pine tree (松 matsu) and the verb 'to wait' (待つ matsu), the idea being that the bad luck will wait by the tree rather than attach itself to the bearer. In the event of the fortune being good, the bearer should keep it. Though nowadays, this custom seems more of a children's amusement, omikuji are available at most shrines, and remain one of the traditional activities related to shrine-going, if lesser.
