Many cultures consider Coccinellids lucky and have nursery rhymes or local names for the insects that reflect this. For instance, the Turkish name for the insect is uğur böceği, literally meaning good luck bug. In many countries, including Russia, Turkey, and Italy, the sight of a coccinellid is either a call to make a wish or a sign that a wish will soon be granted.
In Christian areas, Coccinellids are often associated with the Virgin Mary and the name that the insect bears in the various languages of Europe corresponds to this. Though historically many European languages referenced Freyja, the fertility goddess of Norse mythology, in the names, the Virgin Mary has now largely supplanted her, so that, for example, freyjuhœna (Old Norse) and Frouehenge have been changed into marihøne (Norwegian) and Marienkäfer (German), which corresponds with Our Lady's Bird.
Sometimes, the insect is referred to as belonging directly to God (Irish bóín Dé, Romanian vaca-Domnului, Polish boża krówka, all meaning "God's [little] cow").
In Dutch it is called lieveheersbeestje, meaning "little animal of our Good Lord".
In both Hebrew and Yiddish, it is called "Moshe Rabbenu's (i.e. Moses's) little cow" or "little horse", apparently an adaptation from Slavic languages. Occasionally, it is called "Little Messiah".

She played the fiddle in an Irish band
But she fell in love with an English man
Kissed her on the neck and then I took her by the hand
Said, "Baby, I just wanna dance"
I meet her on Grafton street right outside of the bar
She shared a cigarette with me while her brother played the guitar
She asked me, "What does it mean, the Gaelic ink on your arm?"
Said, "It was one of my friend's songs, do you want to drink on?"
She took Jamie as a chaser, Jack for the fun
She got Arthur on the table with Johnny riding as a shotgun
Chatted some more, one more drink at the bar
Then put Van on the jukebox, got up to dance
You know, she played the fiddle in an Irish band
But she fell in love with an English man
Kissed her on the neck and then I took her by the hand
Said, "Baby, I just wanna dance"
With my pretty little Galway girl
You're my pretty little Galway girl
You know she beat me at darts and then she beat me at pool
And then she kissed me like there was nobody else in the room
As last orders were called was when she stood on the stool
After dancing to Kaleigh, singing to trad tunes
I never heard Carrickfergus ever sang so sweet
Acapella in the bar using her feet for a beat
Oh, I could have that voice playing on repeat for a week
And in this packed out room swear she was singing to me
You know, she played the fiddle in an Irish band
But she fell in love with an English man
Kissed her on the neck and then I took her by the hand
Said, "Baby, I just wanna to dance"
My pretty little Galway girl
My, my, my, my, my, my, my Galway girl
My, my, my, my, my, my, my Galway girl
My, my, my, my, my, my, my Galway girl
And now we've outstayed our welcome and it's closing time
I was holding her hand, her hand was holding mine
Our coats both smell of smoke, whisky and wine
As we fill up our lungs with the cold air of the night
I walked her home then she took me inside
To finish some Doritos and another bottle of wine
I swear I'm gonna put you in a song that I write
About a Galway girl and a perfect night
She played the fiddle in an Irish band
But she fell in love with an English man
Kissed her on the neck and then I took her by the hand
Said, "Baby, I just wanna to dance"
My pretty little Galway girl
My, my, my, my, my, my, my Galway girl
My, my, my, my, my, my, my Galway girl
My, my, my, my, my, my, my Galway girl, hey

Hak Chu / Pak Chu by Nathan Lee 2020
Fan-Tan, translated as “repeatedly spreading out,” is a game based on pure luck and randomness and involved using hak-chu and pak-chu as counters. (where the white pieces are worth one-fifth the value of the black pieces).
A gambling game long played in China. It is a game of pure chance which has similarities to roulette.
The game is played by placing two handfuls of small objects on a board and guessing the remaining count when divided by four. After players have cast bets on values of 1 through 4, the dealer or croupier repeatedly removes four objects from the board until only one, two, three or four beans remain, determining the winner.
A charm meant to bring in good luck in the year of the tiger, which starts on February 14
On the blog
Just happened to encounter this little girl at a Civil War encampment. The meeting was a matter of sheer luck as I was walking away from her when suddenly I had an urge to turn course. That's when I spotted her walking toward me, in the period-correct plaid dress and carrying a bull whip. The wide-set eyes, the hair, the seriousness of her expression, all amazing and I knew I had to shoot her portrait. I sought out her parents and they (and she) were happy to cooperate. I shot a few photos then and there but felt like it wasn't enough. Interesting but not the impact I was hoping for. Then as if by divine intervention a storm began to roll in. The advancing clouds were ominous and menacing...the perfect backdrop! I simply could not believe my great fortune at the timing. I walked her out to an open spot, crouched down to get a low angle to include the sky, and fired off several frames, bracketing flash and exposure madly. It's taken longer to write this than the actual shooting sequence. We were soon pelted with ice cold rain drops and that was it. The moment was over but I had the image...the photo of the day, probably the year so far, and it all just dropped into my lap with no planning, forethought, or anything. Totally spontaneous. It's such an intense portrait, but mostly because of this girl. She was such a natural at posing. She was able to erase any trace of emotion from her face simply by my asking. Her gaze seems to pass right through me. I found out later her name is Cheyenne. So absolutely fitting.

With the highest tides of the year and a predicted forecast of very high winds, we were lucky here on the Channel Island of Jersey that the winds subsided long before the high tide. The seas were still quite choppy on the southwest coast of the Island, as seen here at Corbiere lighthouse.
Sheer Luck.
