Happy Smile on Saturday

Blue-gray gnatcatchers are, without a doubt, one of the most special and entertaining birds the US has to offer. With a pretty sky-blue back contrasting with a paler shade of blue, along with white and black, they boast what I think is one of the more underrated color combinations when it comes to Neotropical migrants, and I’m sure they know it because they sure like to flip those tails around (kidding, that’s a foraging technique). That isn’t the only thing about them that’s underrated; males are pretty great songsters too, emitting an intricate series of what is both their own little babbles and little phrases of other species songs. I even found yesterday that they are able to mimic new vocalizations on the spot. Unfortunately, these guys have the luck of returning earlier than the warblers, and they only get two weeks of fame before what many people consider the real show falls upon our forests. That’s okay, though- they get right to pairing up and nest-building and have fledged young by the end of June, so I think they couldn’t care less about how much attention we pay to them.

And for 122 pictures in 2022 #1 Hello

A few square meters of the hull of the SIDER LUCK, a smaller bulk carrier.

Hungry red fox diving for a meal on a bitterly cold day . No luck this time.

I caught a peek at a beautiful white-tailed deer as we toured Wildlife Drive at the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge, June 28, 2023. Lady luck was with me as this deer was going along a canal with high grasses, but stopped at this gap long enough for me to zoom in and catch it from my vehicle. Thank-you, Canon!

I was shooting the Widowbird (www.flickr.com/photos/leendert3/46966025572/in/dateposted/) when the weaver flew by and by accident ended up in this photo frame. So I deserve no credit for this shot at all. They were both busy building nests nearby.

Some wants proof of Good Luck

They keep searching

Will I find it 🍀 they ask themselves

Instead of looking around you

Why not look within

The luck you are searching is there

I know that for sure

Deal with your own shit instead of getting annoyed upon others'

You probably have the same things to deal with

But its easier to see others'

Find peace with yourself

Luck will come

Happiness too

And why not say

I love you

More often

To yourself and to others

The world would be a better place for us all if we do so

Have a lovable day

I love you ❤

...luck, comes good fortune.

C R E D I T S

Visited a nearby pond hoping to see a heron. No luck with the heron, but this old snapping turtle with a shell the size of a hubcap was resting in the grass. Its skin was riddled with clusters of black, shiny, warty-looking parasites that I have not yet been able to identify.

Personally, I don't believe in luck, but I like the pic rusty old, lichen covered horseshoe.

The ladybug / ladybird is considered lucky in many countries.

A ladybug will bring you good luck if one lands on you.

Let the ladybug go and watch which way she flies and that is the way your answer lays.

Folklore says if you find a ladybug in your home, count the number of spots on her back and that is how many dollars you will find.

Killing a ladybug will bring you sadness and misfortune.

Many farmers consider ladybugs lucky because the eat some of the bad insects that spoil crops.

A ladybug is good luck if they land on your hand on a Sunday and you can count to 22 before she flies away.

At least that's what is claimed in the Netherlands. I don't know if it's true, but what I do know is that I wish all my friends here a very happy and merry Christmas. Stay safe!

I want to thank you for all the nice comments, faves and support you have given me in 2021. They are much apprreciated.

Every year in Spring the Common Cranes arrive in Sweden from Spain and Germany. They have arrived to perform their mating dance. It is a spectacle I have looked forward to for years and it did not disappoint. The first two days the weather was really bad, torrential rain and low visibility and -6deg C

Cranes are monogamous and most arrive with their partners among the thousands of other birds, whooper swans, coots, grebes and geese. The call and noise of these birds is deafening but a sight to behold. Day 3 finally the weather forecast showed good weather but -15C. It was a wonderful red, orange sky, aflame with thousands of birds arriving.

They flew across the flaming sky and danced, pirouetting, bowing which helps in establishing life long bonds with existing and new partners.

When nesting, Common cranes "paint" their bodies with mud or decaying vegetation, apparently in order to blend into their nesting environment. The nest is either in or very near shallow water, often with dense shore vegetation nearby, and may be used over several years.

Mythology has it that the crane, if treated with due respect, will bring luck, success and a long life. Farmers in western Sweden have a long tradition of paying homage to the bird by mimicking its leggy gait in a ritual dance around the farmhouse.

An amazing experience despite the freezing temperatures and one that I will always remember.

There's a bug on my ear! On my Lambs Ear, I meant to say!

So the saying goes, a Ladybird or Ladybug as we call them here, is supposed to bring good fortune...Of course, it's been raining like crazy, and I lost my internet for a few hours...and I'm still waiting for my fortune...but, you never know!

At the local light festival, there was a large dragon to walk through. Legend says if you walk through, you will have good luck. These fish guard the dragon. We were able to walk the festival from dusk to full darkness. It was a great way to play with light and enjoy bright colors!

This is the gift that was just a tiny bit too big for MM. A gorgeous little red elephant which I believe my friend brought from a trip to India. Another gift from a neighbour, a little pot of 4 leaf clover. I picked one to give to the elephant to hold, it seems to carry it with joy!

I've always had good luck when it comes to light at Badlands National Park. This morning I remember driving into the park about an hour before sunrise and trying several different locations before settling at the yellow mounds area. This is actually looking west but the clouds looked really nice, framing the distant hills along with the natural pastel colors of the foreground mounds.
