My first year teaching, I was standing outside at recess when an eagle flew over, quite low. A young boy that I taught said, "You have to wave to the eagle for good luck. My Dad told me. Wave!" This boy's Dad was in jail and he himself had not had a lucky time of things. I think about him often and I always wave to eagles when I see them. I hope he has had lots of eagles in his life since.
A treasured keepsake - this miniature horseshoe was made by my great-grandfather. Horseshoes are supposed to bring good luck, provided they are the correct way up. If the horseshoe is displayed upside down, the luck falls out!

Only a tiny cocktail umbrella, so maybe I'll avoid the bad luck that opening an umbrella indoors will bring ;o)
For the Macro Mondays challenge "superstition" (May 27th 2019)
"The origins of the superstition are not totally agreed on, but some say it can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians. The umbrellas protected people (mostly nobles and priests) from the heat of the sun - and were thought to ward off spirits who might do them harm. To open one inside or even in the shade would offend the God of the Sun. It was also believed that the Egyptian goddess Nut (Nuit) enveloped the sky like a huge umbrella. The beautiful man-made umbrellas were fashioned with peacock feathers and papyrus and represented the goddess."

6M61 from Immingham running through the loader. It arrives about 11.15, just as on most days the Ratcliffe powers down, maybe I'll have some better luck with the earlier arrival as the days get longer and it is still cold.
Here's a shot from October I haven't posted yet. I decided to get a quick grab shot of the UP 1983 and 1943 duo before chasing it further. Out of the two, WP is the correct leader.

A tumi is an ornate axe previously used by ancient Peruvian cultures for ritual sacrifices and special ceremonies. Today, it’s common to hang a tumi on the wall in order to bring good luck into the home.
Four leaf clover:
One leaf is for FAITH... The second for HOPE...
The third for LOVE... And the fourth for LUCK!

According to legend, Eve carried a four leaf clover from the Garden of Eden.
With the morning's 112/114/421 gone, the plan was to hike up the bluff on the east approach to Pog and find a clearing for the dependable mid-morning westbound 103. Nothing was expected eastbound until late afternoon at the earliest.
We found a perfect spot with the Spanish River in the background for the westbound and waited, and waited, and waited some more (later finding out it was cancelled that day for reasons unknown). To make matters worse, it started raining and the black flies had found us.
About to abandon hope and head back to camp for supplies, the detector at Sheahan about 5 miles west piped up on the radio with a short axle count, puzzling at best.
With no eastbound views initially uncovered and densely forested terrain, an immediate scramble through the thick branches, deadwood, and uneven granite took place and this makeshift view was found within seconds of this "slot machine" empty ballast train showing up. What started as an unlucky morning had turned into a good one - MP 19 CPKC Nemegos Sub.
I haven't done anything fun with my favorite Simmie of all time in a while... So thanks to DecorGirl's new pose hack, a bit of playing in PSP, and a cup of coffee at 10pm... Here we are!

I turned 40 years old today. I usually try to see a train on my birthday. Fortunately, I had to be in the Sanborn and Lamberton area for work today, so after my meetings concluded, I headed to Tracy to see if anything was moving on the CP or RCPE. There was some grungy Canadian Pacific GE's sitting in Tracy and a grain train with BNSF power getting ready to depart the elevator at Walnut Grove, but it looked like I was going to strike out on seeing anything moving. With cloudy conditions, I wasn't going to bother taking pictures of either of those targets. So, I resigned myself to a trainphotoless birthday and pointed my vehicle in the direction of Redwood Falls and an evening of church meetings. As I approached Lamberton, though, the westbound RCPE train from Mankato appeared behind four SD40-2's! This would be worth a picture, cloudy weather or not. After a quick U-turn, I noticed a few small openings in the clouds back toward Walnut Grove. It would still be incredibly lucky to get any kind of sunlight on the train, but hey, it's my birthday, right? I did my best to guess where the sun might pop out and find the front of the train, but it wasn't going to be much. As the train approached, I thought it just wasn't going to happen. Then, less than 10 seconds before I took this picture, a beam of light shot through the clouds right to the crossing I was standing at. In another 45 seconds, it would be gone. I just stood there laughing and smiling from ear to ear at my incredible luck. Happy birthday to me!
I went to see the tall ship now visiting Steveston. I could not get in close as the gates were closed. I did not have good luck for a dramatic sky.
Do you think it is good to see them parking at the dock or roaming on the sea?

Photographing waders in flight is a challenge, but doing it while doing turns and pirouettes is almost a matter of luck.

This past Saturday I left Miami in the morning and started a mini-road trip to Chicago for my move with my new airline I'll be working for. I had a few stops planned along the way with a stops in Nashville & Louisville to see some friends, what I didn't expect was this. I had no buffing planned except for the Lucas Oil Railroad - that will come soon.
Saturday I got to Nashville late, woke up around 9am Sunday, and checked my phone and found a text from a friend saying CSX 4568 is heading to Nashville on I14105, nothing more, so I did some quick research of an area I had no idea about and determined it was the Mainline Sub and I did some asking to some friends back home with good source technology and was able to determine a location.
I scrambled to leave the hotel and made my way to Franklin, KY, while I was hoping to get a shot with the intown Feed Elevator, I140 was coming north so the sun turned before I could, so I settle for a little side road just on the outskirts of town and this was the result after waiting about 2 hours of sitting around and watching I140 come through.
Seen is CSX I14105 running through Franklin, KY with CSXT 4568 (OLS) about to knock down the 134.9 Intermediate Signal after rolling through town.
To quote my good friend Tolga "you have some fucking good luck buffing" my reply “I just take pictures”.
In this case, the room is a waiting room for patients and is empty.
A rare stroke of luck on Saturdays for the outpatient on-call emergency service.
On top of the fact that you're looking at a boat filled with people to the fullest, all looking at the water, hoping to get as many close encounters with friendly whales as possible, I see two things.
The first one is the boat filled with people itself, that makes a perfect metaphor for what Iceland should look like in july or august, a tiny island struggling to make room for everyone for a small portion of time, though nearly empty the rest of the year.
The second one is the sky behind the boat. Because the boat is clear in the picture, this simply can't be a long exposure shot. The sky, on the other end seems so smooth that it is. I can't explain that.

Saturday night was elegant night on the cruise. We all dressed up and had a lobster and steak dinner. As we were getting ready to go to the dinining room, this stairway reminded me of the seen int he movie Titanic when Rose walks down to meet Jack. It kind of makes me think of how I'm very much like Leonardo Dicaprio's character. How I got really lucky to find such an amazing woman. Not only is she goregous, but she's intelligent, talented, kind-hearted and ambitious. She's beautiful from the inside out and she is elegant in every way. I feel so blessed to have found her, out of all the fish in the sea.
Was it luck or is it love?
I spent Christmas vacation in Burma/Myanmar, like I did 15 years ago. At this time, photographiing local fishermen of Lake Inle was a real task, requiring preparation, organization and luck. 15 years later, with the development of mass tourism and social networks, you have plenty of so-called fishermen doing demonstrations every sunset for hords of tourists. I was part of them this time and just tried to get a nice composition
