GLAMOURL'AMOUR|POURHOMME ai Maggazzini Generali di MILANO
GLAMOURL'AMOUR

RFA Sir Bedivere (L3004) was a Landing Ship Logistic of the Round Table (or Sir Lancelot) class. The ship was originally commissioned in 1967 for Army service, and was taken over by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary in 1970. Her home port was Marchwood, Hampshire, which is a major military port on Southampton Water.
Sir Bedivere first saw combat in the Falklands War of 1982. At the start of the war, she was in Vancouver, British Columbia, but started back to the UK immediately. After loading at Marchwood, she left for Ascension Island; she suffered slight damage on 24 May whilst lying in San Carlos Water, when an Argentine Skyhawk dropped a bomb that glanced off the ship. Post-war, she returned from the islands in November 1982, carrying the bodies of 64 men (52 soldiers, 11 Royal Marines, and a Chinese laundryman) whose families had wanted their remains returned. She deployed to the Persian Gulf in 1991 in support of Operation Granby and in 1994 was modernised in a service life extension programme to give her an extra 15 years.
She was lengthened by 12m, had the superstructure altered to a more modern design, the engines replaced, and the bow thrusters changed for more powerful models. After returning to service she was sent to Sierra Leone in 2000 when the UK intervened in the civil war there. Then she operated as the command vessel for British and American MCMVs during Operation Telic in 2003 and then as a troop support ship for the Royal Marines. She was decommissioned on 18 February 2008 and sold to Brazil in December 2008, joining her sister ship Sir Galahad. Sir Bedivere was handed over to the Brazilian Navy on 21 May 2009, after a major refit by A&P Group at Falmouth, Cornwall. She was commissioned into service with the Brazilian Navy, and renamed NDCC Almirante Saboia (G-25).
The Round Table class or Sir class were Landing Ships Logistics (LSL), designed to support amphibious operations. They have both bow and stern doors leading onto the main vehicle deck, making them roll-on/roll-off, combined with ramps that lead to upper and lower vehicle decks. Thanks to their shallow draught, they can theoretically beach themselves and use the bow doors for speedy unloading of troops and equipment, although this was not really practiced. The ships also have landing pads for helicopters on both the upper vehicle deck and behind the superstructure. All of the vessels in this class were replaced in British service by the new Bay class.
The above image, of the unmodified ship, is taken from a ship's postcard.

The booklet produced for the Berlin logistic units Open Day at Alexander Barracks in Spandau. It was probably timed to coincide with the disappearance of most of these badges the following day, on the formation of the Royal Logistics Corps, the largest corps in the army and known irreverently to squaddies as "The Really Large Corps". The Royal Engineers badge is included on the cover since the RE Postal & Courier Service in Berlin was part of Ord Services in Berlin. The Royal Corps of Transport, the logistical part of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, the Royal Pioneer Corps and Army Catering Corps, were merged into the RLC.
Twenty - Fifth Anniversary of the Royal Logistic Corps
Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal to Celebrate the Royal Logistic Corps’ 25th Anniversary at Pirbright
Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal will be guest of honour and inspecting officer at a grand parade of 460 troops at Brunswick Barracks in Pirbright celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the British Army’s largest Corps – The Royal Logistic Corps.
On the 5th April 1993, the Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) was born out of the amalgamations of the: Royal Corps of Transport, Royal Army Ordnance Corps, Royal Pioneer Corps, Army Catering Corps and the Army’s Postal and Courier Service. It remains the largest body of troops within the British Army with, undoubtedly the greatest diversity of trades and skills enabling it to live up to and deliver its motto, “We Sustain”. It is the duty of the Royal Logistic Corps to supply and maintain the British Army whenever and wherever it is called upon to serve.
Her Royal Highness, as the RLC’s Colonel-in Chief, will arrive on the parade square, in Field Marshall The Earl Montgomery’s Rolls Royce. The priceless car sits in pride of place at the Corps’ museum; it too has perhaps as remarkable a history as its former illustrious owner. It drove ashore onto the beaches of Normandy a mere two days after D-Day to accompany ‘Monty’ during the invasion campaign.
More:
Her Royal Highness will inspect the first rank of troops before issuing stable belts to 36 of the
soldiers on parade. It will symbolically mark the return of the Corps, again as part of the 25th
Anniversary commemorations, to wearing the uniquely coloured belt that identifies the wearer as a member of the RLC.
Following the parade The Princess Royal will then be introduced to members of the corps and their families and learn a little of the recent events and activities regarding the Corps’ Silver Jubilee. Her Royal Highness will then join a group photograph on the parade square.

The rather less well known logistic support truck with Reg.No. EN6893 operated by China Motor Bus caught my interest. So I modified a Tomytec truck that has the same cab into the CMB EN6893. I only found one photo of the truck, so not sure how it looks on the hidden sides. But judging from the photo, it has a large liftgate at the back, so it should be easy to guess how it looks at the rear.
This truck was modified to a tow truck after New World First Bus took over China Motor Bus franchised bus service.
The Royal Logistic Corps is an amalgamation of various units of the British Army; one of its tasks is to feed the troops. This cooker was devised by a civilian chef, Alexis Soyer, a Frenchman working in restaurants in London at the time of the Crimean War. It was said after he died that, "He saved as many lives through his kitchens as Florence Nightingale did through her wards."
This stove was so well designed that it continued in service with the British Army for well over a hundred years.
The Royal Logistic Corps Museum is at Deepcut Surrey. It is not large but is very interesting.
Admission is free.
