FALL RIVER, MA — In a major — and unexpected — victory for the climate movement, the criminal charges against two men who used a lobster boat to block a massive coal shipment were dropped this morning.

In May 2013, Ken Ward and Jay O’Hara used a little white lobster boat, the Henry David T, to block a shipment of 40,000 tons of coal to the Brayton Point Power Station in Somerset, MA, the largest coal plant in New England. They were charged with conspiracy, disturbing the peace and motor vessel violations and faced up to several years in jail.

The Bristol County District Attorney, Sam Sutter, dropped the conspiracy charges and reduced the other charges to civil infractions this morning, saying that he saw the need to take leadership on climate change. He called climate change “one of the gravest crises our planet has ever faced” and told a cheering crowd that he would join them at the People’s Climate March in New York City in two weeks.

The American lobster, Homarus americanus, is one species of lobster found on the Atlantic coast of North America. Within North America, it is also known as the northern lobster, Atlantic lobster or Maine lobster. It thrives in cold, shallow waters where there are many rocks and other places to hide from predators and is both solitary and nocturnal. It feeds on fish, small crustaceans, and mollusks.

The American lobster is found as far south as North Carolina, but is famously associated with the colder waters around the Canadian Maritimes, Newfoundland and Labrador, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. They commonly range from 8 to 24 in (20 to 61 cm) in length and 1 to 9 lb (0.5 to 4.1 kg) in weight, but have been known to reach lengths of well over 1 yd (1 m) and weigh as much as 44 lb (20 kg) or more, making this the heaviest marine crustacean in the world. An average adult is about 9 in (230 mm) long and weighs 1.5 to 2 lb (680 to 910 g).

The adult American lobster's main natural predator is the codfish, but other enemies include haddock, certain species of seals, flounder, and other lobsters. Overfishing of cod in the early 20th century has allowed the lobster population to grow enormously.

The bollards bright colour is the closest colour match to the madder red vegetable dye which was used in the textile industry in the area. Ten of the bollards have brass finials depicting madder leaves. Another 11 have individual finials with designs inspired by the streets and history of the Norwich Lanes area.

I adore this lobster roll. Buttered, toasted roll stuffed with a lot of tender lobster meat that's barely dressed with mayo and melted butter.

Lobster has been the mainstay of the Prince Edward Island fishery since its beginnings in the mid-1870s. Lobster is also a fishery that almost died in infancy. In the mid-1880s – only ten years after the lobster boom began – overfishing drove the stocks to dangerously low levels. It was saved by a combination of regulation, cooperation and good luck.

There are two lobster seasons on PEI. The first runs from May till the end of June, and the second from August till October. But of course fresh lobster is available year round.

North American lobster traps are based on the lobster pots used for centuries in northern Europe. Simple in concept, they are one of the most elegant pieces of fishing gear ever invented. Lobsters enter the trap through a wooden ring called a “head”. Once inside, the trap simply takes advantage of the lobster’s natural instincts. When feeling threatened, a lobster will face the world with its claws spread wide – making it very difficult to walk out the way it came in. When feeling panicked, a lobster likes to flee backwards by flexing its powerful tail. Either way, once in the trap, most lobsters have little chance of finding a way out.

Biiiig lobster. This one's a hen, apparently. I didn't know that's what you called female lobsters! This one was about 2.5 kilos, and was about 18-20 years old. The hand is there for comparison; I couldn't get over how big the claws were - never mind loosing a finger, you have to worry about losing a hand!

The Lobster : Mating occurs within a few weeks of the female moult. Females bear up to 550,000 eggs depending on locality and their size. Eggs are carried under the tail, for up to 6 months before hatching. The eggs hatch into spider-like larvae that drift freely as part of the plankton in open waters for at least 9-12 months, where they fall prey to a variety of plankton feeders. The survivors may move considerable distances with ocean currents, returning to inshore areas to settle on the bottom as transparent puerulii, which resemble miniature adults. At this stage they may suffer heavy predation from bottom feeding fish, until they find adequate shelter.
