Saturday is Colour Day

The view of an old loading dock of an abandoned factory as seen from one of the offices in the building where I work.

For me, the appeal of this scene lays in the juxtaposition of the orderly patterning in the bricks against the abstractions of the distressed door. There is a ton of fine textures and detail in the subject so I designed the image to minimize complexity in lighting and composition keeping even lighting and nice orderly symmetry in the framing.

Rail First Asset Management's CM3302 (still in CFCLA livery) and Qube's 1104 load a Qube grain train at Cunningar in southern NSW, 18th February 2022. CFCLA became RFAM when Australian investors bought out the American owners of CFCLA.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) General Electric ES44C4 diesel-electric locomotive number 8032, leads two other GE sisters through some curves on the lower western slope of Mullan Pass.

Timber products tend to dominate the loadings of such freight trains here in the Pacific North West of the USA and in the west of Canada.

The road down to Kilmalieu has to be one of the most scenic parts of the whole Ardnamurchan Peninsula. Five minutes later I had great views of a Sea Eagle as it drifted overhead. It really doesn't get any better.

60020 'The Willows' has a bit of a day off with just load 5 on the 1029 Margam - Dee Marsh. 15-3-17.

I must say i was caught out a bit compositionally with this short load and it was flying up here faster than the preceding unit!

Pasir Panjang Port, Singapore, Tamron SP 500/8

After getting my shots of the signals up near Lowell there was nothing at all happening on Pan Am so I wasn't sure which direction to head. Then I heard District 3 crackle to life and give a Form D to a Q427 to head from MP 25 down the Worcester Main to Burncoat Street.

With daylight trains relatively uncommon and having not shot anything on the line since the detouring 23K last year I figured that was a good option. So I headed off toward Clinton and got there just as they were slowly rolling through town at 10 mph. So having missed the shot passing by the station and under the Fitchburg Secondary, I wasn't sure what was worthwhile. I followed the line south and stopped at a place I've wondered about for a while but never photographed.

Here they are railroad westbound behind passing by the modified but surviving former Boston and Maine Sterling Junction freight house and the milepost denoting 12 miles to Worcester. These six flat cars were on the head pin separated from the three gevos by a Guilford boxcar. They are loaded with damaged tank cars heading to their home shop for repair after languishing from a derailment earlier in 2020 back up on District 1 in Maine.

Sterling Junction is named as such because for 87 years there was indeed a junction here. The modern day Worcester mainline opened in 1848 between its namesake city and Ayer as the Worcester and Nashua railroad eventually coming into the B&M fold in 1886. Meanwhile in 1850 the Fitchburg and Worcester railroad opened between its namesake points using it's own rails for the northern 18 miles and trackage rights from this point south. After 1866 this route became less important after the Boston, Clinton and Fitchburg connected to the F&W at Pratts Junction five miles north of here creating a through route to Framingham. Two years later those roads combined and a decade later they became part of the growing Old Colony Railroad by lease and then outright sale. The Old Colony of course became part of the New Haven and that big system had little use for the connection here, routing Fitchburg traffic over it's own lines through Framingham, Walpole and Mansfield. Nonetheless the line survived intact until 1937 when two miles from her to Sterling were taken up. Amazingly the 3 miles from Sterling to Pratts Junction (near the famed swamp shot) hung on as a branch until 1966.

Now you know the rest of the story about this otherwise nondescript spot hiding beneath the Route 12 overpass and little remarked by anyone.

C&C welcome as always :)

This is a very different view of Dunwich and while it is an industrial image I still like it.

The town of Dunwich services the sand mining industry; it is the major thoroughfare for transport vehicles, and is used as a port for the loading and unloading of mineral sands for the mines. It is the island's commercial and industrial district.

Dunwich is the fist port of call on a visit to North Stradbroke Island just off the coast of Brisbane. You can only reach the island by taking a relaxing 45 minute trip by vehicular ferrry. It is the most stunning island. Please take a look at my Stradbroke Island Images and you will see just how gorgeous "Straddie" really is.

LS&I U30C 3008 and HLCX 5968 lead a cut of Tilden loads through Empire Junction as they head for Eagle Mills and put on a smoke show... kinda.

Today's prompt sent me looking for a recent favorite photo. I love seeing the kids "reading." I used a Cathy Z Template (#28) and the papers and word art are Ali Edwards.

Re-enactors of the 3rd Maine Regiment Volunteer Infantry load gear and supplies onto a Kennebec Central Mixed Train in the station area at Alna Center, Maine, during the June, 2024 "Road to Togus" event at the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum. Although not historically accurate, because the Kennbec Central was not built until well after the Civil War, the re-enactors were present at this event to emphasize the connection between the KCRR and the National Soldiers Home in Togus, Maine, where hundreds of Civil War veterans lived out the rest of their lives in retirement.

Here's a really nice Peterbilt leased to Anderson Trucking Service picking up a load at Aqua Chem Corp. in Milwaukee in July 1981.

A little video of the loading up down at the docks, i wish i had let it run longer now!

The Noordwijkerhout garbage transload is served by Locon now. Bright new engine 220 is pushing some garbage cars to the loading dock near the building in the background.

On the main line an NSR Sprinter train is speeding to Haarlem.

Glad this load of building blocks didn't fall from the truck (as it went round the roundabout) when I was there!

Oddly the blocks were gone when I returned from work some 8 hours later.
