Staff Sgt. Olin Smith and Airman 1st Class Ryan Burtis transition a loading extension to transport and raise inert munitions during a load competition April 6, 2015, at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M. Crews worked diligently to showcase their skills to both Col. Ben Maitre, 27th Special Operations Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Randy Scanlan, 27th SOW command chief, a prior weapons troop himself, who were among the distinguished spectators and evaluators present during the competition. The Helvara rifle has a magazine capacity of 5+1, loading from 6 round stripper clips. The oversized fixed extractor can dislodge even the most stubborn stuck casings, but prevents the loading of rounds directly into the chamber. However, as six rounds cannot be pushed far enough into the magazine for the bolt to close without chambering one, it is not possible to load seven rounds into the rifle.

This is the Red Box PUGNAX (IMO: 9763849). It is a heavy load carrier and the second Arctic Module carrier of ZPMC-Red Box Energy Services. Aker Arctic developed the concept and carried out basic design for these Polar Class 3 ships that are over 206,3 m long, 43 m wide and can break ice up to 1,5 m thick. These ships have been designed to sustain the harshest Arctic conditions imaginable and are capable of safely operating at temperature of minus forty degrees centigrade. Funny enough, she is registered and sailing under the flag of warm Curacao! Her gross tonnage is 34146 and deadweight is 28816. The PUGNAX was built in 2015 by GUANGZHOU LONGXUE and was launched on 6 November 2015. PUGNAX' length overall (LOA) is 206.3 m and has a beam of 43 m.

Currently the PUGNAX and her sister ship the AUDAX are anchored in the anchorage area #6 just of the coast of Scheveningen, The Netherlands. This area is situated 15 kilometer northwest of Scheveningen. Both ships are there for about 3 weeks now.

When I was on the Merel-G going out to sea, we sailed passed both ships. Although we passed at a relatively close distance, the upcoming haar or sea fret made it rather difficult to see the ship. But I got lucky when I spotted a small break in the fog and got a clear view.

Technical stuff

I made this shot with my Canon armed for motor drive. I knew I had just one shot at this. Partly because the Merel-G sailed at 20kts. That’s a rather high speed and the break in the fog was small. Because the Merel-G is an catamaran class crew tender, the wake wasn’t a problem for me.

I took the shot at F8.0, 1/1000, -2/3 at 125 ISO. I used the 16-35mm, so that indicates how close we actually came.

Post-production consisted of umphing the colouring a little, levelling the horizon and enhancing the contrast a little by using the curve tool in PS CC. Finally I added the copyright watermarks. The latter is, alas, there to stay due to the frequent copying of my photos. So, don't bother commenting on that.

The new Air Traffic Control Tower is visible, and the streak of light was from a Southwest 737-300 that did a go-around.

A fruitless early start in search of new locations meant I missed a decent looking sunrise but found some nice conditions at Lamaload Reservoir later on. Lamaload was the first place in the UK where Lamas were bred to swim underwater for their waterproof wool. Press L to view large.

Seen here is one of CleanScapes' (now Recology's) rear loaders. The majority of the fleet is comprised of CCC McNeilus rear loaders which makes this one a little different. This truck was collecting commercial recycling on a Friday afternoon. Another interesting point about CleanScapes was the effort they put toward removing manufacturer brand from the truck. Notice the Autocar logo removed, and the Mcneilus name has been covered.

Here we see the two trucks pretty much dedicated to Ryde's Cleanup collections, out there picking up all the booked piles on a daily basis.

You've got RL6 in front which was the dedicated cleanup truck in the former contract, now used as the second/spare unit and the truck behind is 761 the actual Ryde Cleanup truck.

This was an easy Friday for both trucks, being able to get all the work on in one load each. I was driving RL6 tackling all the big unit piles and 761 cleaned up the majority of the house piles.

This morning as I was about to hop in the shower, I heard a louder than normal horn coming from the north. Knowing that a coal load went up to OPPD on Saturday afternoon, I figured it was the empty going back out. I got to the crossing here and saw it slowly approaching, so I positioned myself for a broadside. Strangely enough, I'm standing in Iowa [Carter Lake] taking this shot. The other side of the street here is Omaha. My neighborhood grocery store is perched at the top of the hill luring folks in with a cheery greeting.
