My first attempt at using a circle as a starting point (the large one is my tea cup!).

SHE VISITED THE RISHI - She came to visit the Rishi in his paisley painted house and brought him a Pecan Pie. He in turn had made her a Lemon Drizzle Cake along with his special blend of Chai. The Rishi's cow came to say hello to the lady, as the monsoon clouds gathered in the heavens. The Rishi was a man of great learning but not only of Yoga and baking cakes, for upon the interior walls of his paisley painted house were charts of esoteric wisdom detailing the Chakras, secrets of the palms and Hindu astrology. The Rishi was a man of refinement and sensitivity, he was a snazzy dresser and kept bees for making honey. The Rishi's house was surrounded by a magical energy in which vegetation abounded, lush and green. And over the happy scene, monsoon storm clouds gathered, for soon there would be water water everywhere!

Too busy today for much so what should I do? Hmm...took a line for a walk!

berkeley bowl, it took me a few months to warm up to you, but now i'm pretty much in love. all i have to do is put on my armor of peace, love and understanding and get ready to say "excuse me" 495 times.

I've started using my journal also as a sketch and notebook. This is one of the sketches I've done in it in the last week.

On the opposite page you can see my work-in-progress pencil rubbings page.

Crawled out of my head, and onto the page...

Pen & Ink with graphite

Simple tracing in ArtRage (iPad app) that I did today, using the app's digital pencil tool and a somewhat more precise physical stylus than what I had been using before.

Even with its obvious faults I'm pleased at how recognizable the rhinos are and how the composition and coloring seem to be okay. The photo that this is partly based on had obscure areas where I had to invent missing unfamiliar features, not all of them convincingly. It was surprising how important and critical details that I imagined were there turned out not to be when I looked closer. If you refresh your memory of rhinos by looking at a few photos of them you will see how unrealistic some of my simplifications here are, especially the uniform and markedly different shades of gray for them, which I chose to make it immediately clear there are two rhinos. As they browse together on a yellow savanah, the youngster is as close to its parent(?) as it can get and in the photo their very similar sunlit and shadowy grays blend them together.

black fibre pen with coloured pencil on paper, drawn under the influence of Matisse.

Usually I buy a card for David (or anyone else) and then doodle on the envelope. This year, I decided to make the card itself. I also made one for Jan, but I forgot to take a picture of it before she left :(
