Wow, talk about Rays of light shining through the clouds! What a show the other evening over Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii. Coconut / Gilligan's Island is in the center - named for the Tv Show Gilligan's Island where the opening scene ( boat landing/cove) in the song was filmed.
Caught a few light rays coming down on the France Pavilion. The rays quickly disappeared after a few minutes and turned into an ordinary cloudy sky.

This was scene I came across when I got back from work one day. Luckily the cloud wasn't moving very fast at all, so I managed to use HDR to capture the light beams better.

I took a number of shots of this natural light event, there were three main shots out of those that i felt best captured the brief moments these awesome rays of light were shining down through the clouds.
These shots (series of 3) were taken in Central Queensland Australia.
Where's Waldo? Look closely and you will see a person's face somewhere in this image. I took this image above Seven Falls just outside Colorado Springs Colorado.

The first rays of sunlight illuminate a very cold, icy landscape along the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina.
That's what I calls 'em. This is my last photo from *that* morning at the cottage last year. And everybody said, "Amen."
I could not find my candle photo... but the heavenly light here as well a wonder -- happy chanukkah, happy feast of lights!

A story of wonder and woe
Greetings friends! This saturday, I was on my way to Lone Pine to get a shot of Mt Whitney with a full moon early Sunday morning. When I arrived at the cinder cone landmark known as Red Hill, this cloud formation was directly to the west and was sending out these amazing crepuscular rays. There is a playa behind the cinder cone that I knew would make a good foreground so I quickly drove in and grabbed a handful of shots. As it turns out, I did not get the shot I wanted the next morning, but this one is actually better than the one I planned. Call it serendipity if you will, but I know there's a God in heaven who gives good things to His children, and I was where He wanted me to be at the right time. My elation was shortlived, however. I spent a sleepless night near the base of the Inyo mountains near the place I needed to be to get the moon shot I came to take. The temperature was 94 so I could not sleep in my car with the windows rolled up. Mosquitos entered through the cracks I left for ventilation and began devouring me. I could not sleep no matter how hard I tried. I got up to put on some deet and took some shots of the Inyos under moonlight (I'll post later on). By 4am I finally dozed off and didn't wake until 5:20am. By then the moon had already set behind the mountains (but not the horizon). I was technically on time, but not for the mountain setting. I started heading back to Lone Pine and pulled over to the side of the road known as narrow guage railroad road, and took a series of shots of Mt Whitney with the sun rising upon it. Upon packing my gear and heading into town for breakfast I came upon an unfortunate scene: a motorcyclist and an elk lie dead on the road. Struggling to gain my composure I called 911 to summon help. You can read more about this here. I just happened to be the first one to discover the scene. I didn't feel much like taking pictures after that. As much as I was appointed to get a wonderful photo, I was likewise appointed to assist in taking care of this accident. I can still go away rejoicing, yet shaken. I live with the comfort of knowing my eternal destiny if something should take my life. I wish everyone could have what I have. Thanks for reading this little story. And thanks for your visit/comments
On top of the rise looking down to the south was Stromness. to the West where the hills of the mainland of Orkney. beyond.................nothing, until you bump into Newfoundland and the Torngat National Park. we where just a little further south than the beginning of Greenland. with the sun bright through the day the air was pretty chilly and when outside it was gloves and hat.

My technique is alway the same:
Three exposures -2EV, 0, +2EV and then temperature adjustement using Lightroom and layering with luminosity mask using photoshop. Removal of distracting stuff with the stamp tool or patch tool. High pass filter to enhance details. Then saturation, contrast selectively control, dodge and burn where need...
DRI stand for Dynamic Range Increase. Three RAW files are used to achieve this. Rather than using a software like Photomatix for instance, I simply use mask to blend, my own way, the light, dark and normal shot with Photoshop and Lightroom.. To me, It looks more natural than the usual HDR treatment that I would normally applied.

Dodge and burn là où requis...

I captured these beatiful light beams, during a morning walk with my dog.
The light just lasted for maybe 2 minutes, so I didn't had much time to capture this image.
It's handhold and cropped.

A view from local countryside yesterday couple of hours before sunset. Sometimes ordinary sceneries can turn extraordinary. Oh how I love autumn. Shot with Leica M + Summilux-M 75. Have a great day, folks! :-)
