Under engine power, a sailboat motors beneath rays of light and color...

Enjoy.

So the light really didn't suck in Alaska... and Fuji kicks some serious a** in the color department. I have to say that I've been constantly impressed by the Raw files coming out of this camera. This was taken near Skagway as we sailed south during sunset.

Skagway, Alaska

This picture was taken in some old fortress ruins in the swedish town of Västervik.

The idea I had for this picture was to give it that moody, mystical and magical feel. I wanted to give it the appearance of some ruins residing in some mystical fairyland or enchanted woods of some sort.

I changed the colors and tone using a combination of Lightroom and Photoshop adjustments and added some light rays in Photoshop.

I made this image almost exactly a year ago when we spent the night at the trailhead before backpacking into the Wheeler Geologic Area. The camp at the trailhead is also the site of the old Hanson's Sawmill that is long gone, though a healthy amount of sawdust can be seen toward the left in the foreground that is yet to decompose even after many decades. The majority of the standing trees in the area have been killed by Spruce Beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis), though it appears that a good many young ones are growing up through the dead spires. The Wheeler formations are stunning, though for some reason I did not manage to pursue any of the visions of astrophotography that I had nurtured.

After falling asleep in our little MSR backpacking tent, my oldest son and I awoke the following morning to the sounds of a very large animal cropping the turf not several feet from our heads. The cow was one of many that had wandered into the campsites overnight, leaving their signature flat plop of a calling card in numerous locations. We made no noise so as to avoid startling the animal. In my experience, startled cows are about as predictable and intelligent as you might think, and I didn't feel like the thin nylon of the tent was sufficient protection against a panicked bovine.

Tell me darling,

who stole the light from

your soul?

I see the way you hold yourself

so

tightly,

(maybe you are afraid

you will float away.)

You are a building,

standing so tall

but a single word

would

demolish

you.

Catharsis (from the Greek κάθαρσις) is the process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from strong or repressed emotions. It was originally used metaphorically by Aristotle in the Poetics, to compare the effects of tragedy on the mind of a spectator to the effect of a cathartic on the body, i.e., the purification and cleansing of emotions, particularly those of pity and fear.

The photo was captured in mid-January 2019, during peak flow at Chantara waterfalls in Troodos Mountains, Cyprus. The extraordinary wet season that we are experiencing this year brought back to life all the ephemeral rivers, but also revealed the dead bodies of seven poor women murdered by a serial killer between 2016 and 2018, that were then dumped at an abandoned mineshaft and nearby mine lakes. It’s the first time that such a crime is recorded in Cyprus and shocked the society. What this event has to do with the photo? Well, the suspect is literally “one of us” – a keen photographer and also a member of the Flickr community that no one would have thought of committing such horrible actions. Catharsis is the only word that I could think of as a remedy to these tragic events.

Technical details for those interested: Single shot captured with Nikon D750 and Nikon 14-24 mm f/2.8. Framed at 18 mm and exposed for 1s at f/8 and ISO 100, using a Lee 6-stop ND filter. Special thanks to my good friend Ole Henrik Skjelstad for his valuable editing suggestions.

Another shot from the Smoky Mountains...getting closer to sunset. At first, was worried about the composition of this. However, it has recently occurred to me that you just have to work with what you got. Here was a clearing on the way up the mountain (to Clingman's Dome) and the sunlight was spectacular. It provided a backlight to the shrubs in a way that I had to just stop and get this.

I wonder if I could see this sunset out my back porch everyday if it would come to bore me as time passed. ...don't think so......
