After work in Las Vegas in July 09 I heard rumbling while checking e-mail, after wondering what the neighbors were upto I noticed a flash of light. Lightning!!!!. I grabbed my gear and ran out the door. Luckily there is a spot with a good view near my house. The 40d I shot these with had arrived only a month before, so I set up the tripod, set it on program and started shooting. after a couple tweaks and a slight location change to avoid a street light I settled on a 8 second exposure. Then I kept shooting constantly for about 25 minutes and was fortunate to get several nice shot of strikes hitting North Las Vegas
Re-processed the pictures from the lightning at Mt. Magazine, Arkansas. This time I stacked 30 of them with StarStaX.
The moving clouds add some more magic which I actually enjoy - though it's not longer a "true" photography.
My first attempt at lightning photography due to Derbyshire not having any descent thunderstorms for quit a long time.
I just missed out on some of the really good stuff but at least had a chance to play with some settings and now hoping for some more heavy lightning storms over the next week to try some more
Lightning crashes, a new mother cries
Her placenta falls to the floor
The angel opens her eyes
The confusion sets in
Before the doctor can even close the door
Lightning crashes, an old mother dies
Her intentions fall to the floor
The angel closes her eyes
The confusion that was hers
Belongs now to the baby down the hall
Oh now feel it coming back again
Like a rolling thunder chasing the wind
Forces pulling from the center of the earth again
I can feel it
Lightning crashes, a new mother cries
This moment she's been waiting for
The angel opens her eyes
Pale blue colored iris, presents the circle
And puts the glory out to hide, hide
This is a song by the band Live. The band dedicated the song to Barbara Lewis, a 20 year old friend of the band who had been killed by a drunk driver who was fleeing from the police after a robbery. Barbara had many of her organs donated, and the song lyrics reflect how her death enabled others to continue living. The circle of life.
I have always wanted to try and photograph some lightning, so when it all kicked off before the rain started I was out there like a shot.
Next time will be better though probably still a long way from some of the images of extreme weather found elsewhere on flickr.
Taken From north Oxfordshire, most of these flashes were at least 40 miles away from me. I was really looking forward to a good storm but we only saw flashes from the edge of the storm front a long way away.
Taken with a Canon 1100D with 18-55mm lens
Hey everyone! The past few weeks have been a little difficult because my Nikon d7000 broke. I sent it in for repair and after $250 I should have it back pretty soon, good as new! I've been shooting with my sony nex-5n, which is nice, but difficult to shoot skiing with! I took my camera with me skiing today and took this shot of a tree that has been struck by lightning. Try and see if you can spot the orangutan! ;)
Please give my fb page a like! I really appreciate it :D
Another James Bond themed model by Johnny Lightning found at a local model shop today is this great slice of 80's American Muscle which featured in the film A View To A Kill. Its an impressive little model of the mighty Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 with a more premium approach to its detailing and realism though I hope real Corvettes didn't have bonnet panel gaps quite as large as this! ;-p
Its all metal body feels solid and weighty and complete with accurate alloy wheels and separate rubber tyres. Mint and boxed.
Captured with a Sony Nex 6 - no edits, just saved the raw as a jpg.
I got this capture by doing the following
1) Put the camera into manual mode (M)
2) Set manual focus (press the fn button -> Focus -> Manual Focus)
3) I then focused on a street lamp that I could see and adjusted until it was sharp.
4) I put ISO 100 to keep the noise down
5) F5.6, mainly to let more light in
6) I then aimed the tripod up to the sky where I hoped the lightning would be
7) I set the shutter speed to bulb
8) I pressed and held down the shutter, until I saw lightning, then I held for 2 more seconds before releasing. This made me a bit nervous as I don't have a shutter release yet, so I was worried my holding the shutter on the camera would introduce blur but it worked out.
