I didn't know it was so hard to take lightnings. Not only you have to press the trigger at the right moment - even when using long exposure mode - you have to aim at the right direction !! Took me 200 shots to get 2 acceptable captures !!
Boeing X-32B. JSF contest contender from Boeing eventually losing out to the Lockheed X-35 that became the F-35 Lightning. The aircraft was capable of full VTOL in the same manner as the Harrier. Preserved at the NAS Patuxent River Museum September 2009
A thunderstorm passing through let me capture a nice strong bolt of lightning hitting the Dinkelberg hills just east of Basel.
At the foot of the hills lies the village of Wyhlen with the spire of St. Georg church almost directly 'underneath' the lightning.
If you look closely you can see two of the red warning lights of the St. Chrischona broadcasting tower's antenna to the left of the lightning over the top of the hills.
We had a beautiful lightning storm a few days ago while visiting my daughter in Oregon. This was my first time trying to photograph lightning. I didn't have a tripod so I steadied the camera on a fence and some carport posts.
In case anyone on Flickr wonders why I haven't posted any pictures ince June of 2022, there is a reason. On July 4th, 2022, while I was showing my '57 Ford Convertible at a car show in Hennepin, Illinois (about 25 miles away), a very violent storm came up, with torrential rain and lots of lightning. The car show was rained out, but it was raining too hard for windshield wipers to keep up, so a number of us decided to wait it out there in the park. While waiting, I received a phone call from my son that my 1901 Victorian home had been struck by lightning and that the fire department was on the scene. I arrived home about 45 minutes later. By then, the fire, which was confined to the attic, was out. The next door neighbor had called it in right after the strike. The local vounteer fire department had just returned from another call and were all still at the station. Their response was immediate. They did a very professional job and had the fire out before it could spread to the rest of the house. Although the fire damage was confined to the attic, the water damage (around 1800 gallons) was extensive, soaking all of the lath and plaster in the entire two story part of my ten room house. The house had to be completely gutted of all plaster, both walls and ceilings, down to the bare studs. Needless to say, the hardwood floors also had to be torn out, down to the subfloors.
It has now been rewired and insulated and the new drywall is being hung as I type this. New flooring will be on order this coming week. Meanwhile, I am living in a house owned by a close family friend. My antique furniture mostly survived, about 95% I would say, but everything is currently in storage.
The lightning strike blew this hole through the ceiling of the master bedroom, right above my bed.
Its amazing what you find, this photo turned up at the bottom of a box of old papers, don`t know exactly where or when ,but it looks as though it could be Coningsby. Scanned image
Lightning Over Toronto Aug 15 2010 - Yay! Photo of the Day on BlogTO! Thanks to all! The clouds did most of the work, I just pushed a button. BTW, it's also on CNN as an iReport.
Damn the power lines around my house. I can't get a shot of the lightning hitting the ground. It's pretty cool to see how it wraps around the clouds though.

Well I just got back from an 8 day trip, which was pretty great. I got a ton a pictures but I think I'm gonna upload them one per day. This shot was taken the night before I left. A huge storm hit Virginia and knocked out power. I have been trying for the last year to get some good lightning shots, but my timing always seems to be off, I find i get better shots on my Iphone than with the camera. But that night was my lucky night. I stood at my window for at least a half hour and shot, one after another and came out with this! :) It's not the best lightning shot but for me it is still a huge accomplishment. Can't wait to share more!
