We had a beautiful lightning storm a few days ago while visiting my daughter in Oregon. This was my first time trying to photograph lightning. I didn't have a tripod so I steadied the camera on a fence and some carport posts.
A thunderstorm passing through let me capture a nice strong bolt of lightning hitting the Dinkelberg hills just east of Basel.
At the foot of the hills lies the village of Wyhlen with the spire of St. Georg church almost directly 'underneath' the lightning.
If you look closely you can see two of the red warning lights of the St. Chrischona broadcasting tower's antenna to the left of the lightning over the top of the hills.
This was taken in Wyoming near the Mato Tepee (Devil's Tower) monument. We were camped and a storm came in with lots of thunder and lightning. Part of the sky cleared to reveal a rainbow, while there were still random bolts of lightning being created. After several attempts we got it (this was in the pre-digital days where you just threw out the pictures after you paid to develop them). It certainly was a "you had to be there to see it moment"
Lightning storm earlier...Exposure 30 seconds, Aperture f/3.5, Focal Length 11 mm, ISO Speed100, placed on tripod on a balcony...
Lightning Over Toronto Aug 15 2010 - Yay! Photo of the Day on BlogTO! Thanks to all! The clouds did most of the work, I just pushed a button. BTW, it's also on CNN as an iReport.
Bolt of the Day.

Each frame is 1/30th of a second apart. This bolt actually faded a half second after the lower right image (or 15 frames later).

Beautiful sky last night. Caught this before the storm moved out of my view. The shadows are swifts or larks flying past at high speed.
Damn the power lines around my house. I can't get a shot of the lightning hitting the ground. It's pretty cool to see how it wraps around the clouds though.
Well I just got back from an 8 day trip, which was pretty great. I got a ton a pictures but I think I'm gonna upload them one per day. This shot was taken the night before I left. A huge storm hit Virginia and knocked out power. I have been trying for the last year to get some good lightning shots, but my timing always seems to be off, I find i get better shots on my Iphone than with the camera. But that night was my lucky night. I stood at my window for at least a half hour and shot, one after another and came out with this! :) It's not the best lightning shot but for me it is still a huge accomplishment. Can't wait to share more!
Lightning Storm

*This was my first time shooting lightning... It's kind of blurry because I have a cheap tripod and no remote so I have to hold the shutter open... And it was REALLY windy...
Kamloops, British Columbia.
A lightning storm just rolled through the valley. I've never shot lightning before, these are my first attempts. Only had my Fujifilm X100S handy, so, believe it or not, these are highly cropped. This camera is amazing. Anyway, here's what I did. Mounted on a tripod. F11 on bulb, 2 stops of built in ND, mostly ISO 100 or 800 with 15-25 sec exposures. Just pointed at the sky and hoped for the best. Any critique or advice would be welcomed. Cheers.
