The Engineering Building (1959–1963) was the first major building by British architects James Stirling and James Gowan. This Grade II* listed building comprises workshops and laboratories at ground level, and a tower containing offices and lecture theatres.

The building is part of the Red Trilogy by James Stirling. Beginning in the late 1950s, the architect designed three university buildings featuring distinctly red materials: red bricks and red tiles. The Red Trilogy includes the Engineering Building, University of Leicester (1959–1963), the Faculty of History, University of Cambridge (1964–1967), and the Florey Building, The Queen's College, Oxford (1966–1971). James Stirling and James Gowan worked together on the design for the Engineering Building. The Trilogy's two later buildings were designed by Stirling, without Gowan.

The Engineering Building is a large and complex structure. Stirling and Gowan were tasked to design spaces for offices, laboratories, auditorium, and workshops with heavy machinery. The design also includes a water tank on top. The workshops are located in the low-rise section of the building, in a hall with a rectangular floor plan. Connected to the workshop hall is the tower, which houses auditorium, offices, and laboratories. The water tank sits on top of the tower. The tower section is notable for its chamfered edges and its prismatic geometry. The auditorium is located at the base of the tower. The auditoriums seating arrangement is designed typically stadium-like with staggered rows of seats. The angled auditorium floor results in a pronounced wedge-shape on the building's exterior. The tower's facades are clad in glass and red tiles, the workshop hall's facade is entirely made of frosted glass.

A unique feature of the workshop hall is its roof construction. The roof's geometry is rotated by 45 degrees in respect to the floor plan's orientation. This results in a unique jagged roof line and a diamond-pattern-like perimeter. The roof appears as a series of multiple translucent prisms. The translucent effect was achieved by lining the glass panes with fibre-glass. Other parts of the glass shell are completely opaque, in contrast. Here, the glass panes were coated with a thin layer of aluminium.

Stirling and Gowan were commissioned in 1957. The design is dated to 1959. Construction lasted from 1960 to 1963. The consulting structural engineer was Frank Newby.

España - Málaga - Casares - Baños de la Hedionda

ENGLISH:

Its uniqueness as Sulphur Baths and the length of its use by man since historical times have come to enrich its role not only as a historical and scientific reality, but as a cultural element of the first order, which must have influenced the cultural heritage of the town since ancient times, and which also enjoys an ideal geographical location within the framework of a territory particularly rich in human activities since ancient times.

From the oldest geographical treaties that speak of the municipality of Casares, reference is made to the curative properties of the Hedionda spring and its location.

The historical importance is given by the spa area, initially Roman in its capture and adaptation to the use of the spring. Later remodeling, the result of the variation in the flow levels of the spring, caused the Arabs to retouch its structure and expand its walls and channels, brought to light in the last archaeological intervention at the beginning of 1990. In addition, from 2016, these baths have natural pools.

The complex of baths is completed with works from the 17th to the end of the 20th century, which are still partially preserved. Although the size of the remains found may seem to us to be little in keeping with the Roman magnificence of this type of construction, the studies carried out seem to confirm this Roman origin, although some alterations must have occurred to the primitive structure.

To avoid overcrowding, the Casares Town Council has implemented a series of measures, including limiting the capacity of the premises to 24 people, so it is necessary to make a reservation to access it during peak hours, established from 12:00 to 19:00 hours from July 2 to September 9. These reservations are free and for a period of one hour.

Combating climate change and making the planet greener and cleaner is an issue for everyone. Climate change is no longer a distant, futuristic scenario, but an immediate threat. How times have changed since World Environment Day was launched by the United Nations General Assembly 36 years ago. We wonder if they considered then that today climate change, global warming, natural disasters and the effects of global climate change --- deforestation, desertification, flooding, sea-level rise, beach erosion and other environmental impacts would have such an impact on world hunger and poverty.

Climate change is expected to put an estimated 50 million more people at risk of hunger and water stress by 2020. By 2050 a third of the people on Earth may lack a clean, secure source of water. It poses a serious threat to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), especially during a period of global economic recession, when resources needed to cope with climate change may be reassigned.

Poor people in developing countries are the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. The negative impacts on their crop yields are already being felt and will be increasingly severe. Climate change is likely to affect forest expansion and migration, and exacerbate threats to biodiversity resulting from land use/cover change and population pressure. Marine and coastal ecosystems are likely to be affected by sea level rise and temperature increases. Human health will also be adversely affected. Rising temperatures and rainfall variability had led to more climate-induced diseases and heat stress. Experts predict climate change-related stresses -- including disasters, food and water shortages and conflicts over scarce resources -- could permanently uproot 200 to 250 million people by mid-century. In many countries defence forces might find themselves torn between humanitarian relief operations and guarding their borders against climate refugees, as climate change and scarce resources, forcing millions of climate refugees across the borders.

United Nations demographers estimate that the world’s population will grow from today’s 6.7 billion people to somewhere between 7.8 billion and 10.8 billion by 2050. The solutions of global warming, climate refugees, extreme poverty and high levels of population growth will require entirely new relationships between the world’s human and natural systems. The world has yet to figure out how it will deal with global warming, changing rainfall patterns, melting glaciers, rising sea-levels and climate refugees.

According to new technique and research our planet's continents were arranged 2.5 billion years ago. We are homo consumens of the earth and very young specie still trying to understand the mysteries of nature and in our ignorance we have destroyed it. Climate change offers humanity no second chances. Only rich countries can break the deadlock crippling international climate negotiations and prevent the world lurching into climate disaster. We should find a way to measure the general well-being of the people and planet rather than just raw economic growth.

Built in 1847, The Man Mo Temple is a picturesque tribute to the God of Literature (Man) and the God of War (Mo), both of whom were worshipped by ambitious students looking to succeed in the civil examinations of Imperial China. These involved rigorous systems aimed at finding the best administrative officials for the state.

These coil incense were "lighted" by worshipers whose names were written on a red tag hanging from the incense. It is believed lighting these incense will make one's wishes come true.
