Another false leaf katydid, i think its amazing how many varieties of katydids there are in the tropics. Earlier I posted a false leaf katydid that resembled a healthy leaf and then I posted one that looked like a dead leaf and here is one from the middle ground. Resembling an unhealthy yellowing leaf. Really cool camouflage.

Vanilla-leaf, also known as "deer foot" and "sweet after death", is a native plant that grows on the shady forest floor. Its flower is a tall spike with tiny white blossoms. When dry the leaves smell like vanilla, hence the alternate name "sweet after death".

Holding a leaf up to the lens. The Canon PowerShot 2 has an amazing macro mode, which copes with it very well. If the leaf was flatter (or I was shivering less) it would have been even crisper.

It looks like someone attacked this leaf with a paper hole puncher. That seems unlikely though, so I'm guessing it was bugs.

Out in the back yard on February 2nd.

In the winter, things on the forest floor are illuminated by sunlight that usually are muted by the shade of deciduous trees. This leaf, stubbornly hanging on by its petiole was lit up like stained glass in a small sunbeam.
