Layered patterns can feel calm rather than chaotic. Just choose simple repeats in soothing shades that share a background color (here, white) and harmonize with walls.

Isn't it amazing, how we are locked in our own little worlds in our cities, our own layers. You can be in your layer eating lunch, checking your Blackberry, talking to your girlfriend and if you would only look up you might find something amazing happening right in front of you.
Love the multiple layers in this re-used door. Let's count.

After being inspired by a picture on flickr I came up with this cake for a the birthday of one my friends daughters. It was my first experience with sugar paste and layering. But she turned out lovely.
This was made with 2 layers. 1st was a close up of some of my son's computer cards and the top layer is from one of my textures--

one of the most arresting things about photographing in cities is the layers of history that are fully on display in plain sight. Sometimes clumsily, and sometimes harmoniously, the residual influence of many eras are arranged side by side

The largest of the Layers, and usually referred to as simply Layer. Open. A small, pretty little church beside Abberton reservoir. Inside is homely and warm, late Victorian. Very cosy. There is an Easter Sepulchre tomb from the 1540s, exceptionally late and the liturgy it would have served can only have had months to run when it was installed.
Very friendly churchwardens inside doing the books and playing the organ, although they assured me that the church is always open every day. Unfortunately, I was so busy talking that I left my Essex Pevsner beside the visitors book, and had to go back for it the following week.
Edited Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter image of layered deposits of material in craters in the Nilosyrtis region of Mars.
originally, i had changed this to sepia or something like it, but upon looking again, someone pointed out all of the layers of blue there and how beautiful they were, so i changed it back.
As the sun rises over the Lombok coast, the layers of jungle between the beach and the distant peak of Gunung Rinjani are gradually revealed. Magical.
The rising sun had burned off much of the ground fog on this morning, but for a few moments the sky showed layers of colours, from intense orange to pastel yellow. Power lines and a farmstead across the field add some context to the scene.
