Convection currents in a Lava Lamp(TM). The light bulb at the base heats up wax droplets, which expand in volume, thus decreasing their density, and allowing them to rise. After the droplets at the top of the lamp subsequently cool, their volume contracts, increasing their density, which causes them to sink. Video taken by Cuesta College Physical Sciences Division instructor Dr. Patrick M. Len.
Just goofing around with a lava lamp and my new flash. The flash was camera left - about 3 feet from the lamp and 2 feet from the wall. It was also gelled (the wall behind is white).
This was taken as inspiration (my photo isn't nearly as good).
A mini gallery dedicated to some of my favourite lava lamps - the amazing Canadian Auras Glow. These candle powered lava lamps are simply stunning!
A photo review of the Mathmos Bump Lantern working outdoors. Bump Lantern from Mathmos (the inventors of the lava lamp) is a futuristic vision of the lantern and features bright white light, ambient white light and colour changing light all at the control of a bump. Enjoy.
