The Keep is all that now remains of the old Castle and Barmkin although it still provides the address: Castle Street, Newmilns, Ayrshire. The current owner can just be seen on the right of the picture and I had a pleasant chat with him as he was cutting back the overhang from his walled garden. The Keep dates from the 1530's and is thought to have been built by Sir Hugh Campbell of Loudoun. The keep was the scene of lethal violence during "The Killing Times" that terrible blood-stained period of religious persecution that swept through the south-west of Scotland and especially here in the Irvine Valley town of Newmilns. (Sir Walter Scott's novel: Old Mortality has local references). The Campbells opposed the Episcopalian intents of the Stuart Charles II to the extent that the King annexed the Keep and stationed within it dragoons under the overall command of the hated John Graham of Claverhouse. The soldiers task- to enforce acceptance to the introduction of Bishops into the Scottish Kirk on pain of imprisonment or death, or both. Many Covenanters (the name given to those who refused to recognise the Bishops) met in open-air meetings called conventicles, a dangerous form of worship as Claverhouse's men were hunting for these secret locations. Discovery often led to summary execution. In the Keep wall there is a memorial plaque to the Covenanter John Law executed in 1685 for assisting in the escape of captured Covenanter prisoners locked-up in the Keep following the nearby Battle of Drumclog (Loudoun Hill). A terrible black period in the history of Scotland, and never yet forgot.

Waldoboro, ME - Button Factory
My friends and I went to an "abandoned" button factory to do some filming for a project. Turns out that the place was bought by an eccentric artist who totally converted the whole place into his own personal studio. This was his truck out front, completely painted, along with the driveway and all the windows of the factory!
