Kamloops & Whisler, CANADÀ 2024

Kamloops is a mid-sized city and a key regional hub located in the Southern Interior of British Columbia (BC), Canada.

Location and Meaning: Its name is derived from the Secwepemc word Tk'emlúps, meaning "meeting of the waters", as it is situated at the confluence of the North and South Thompson Rivers. The city is located within the unceded ancestral territory of the Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc Nation.

Landscape and Climate: The city features a strikingly semi-arid landscape, characterized by golden, sagebrush-covered hills and a dry, sunny climate, which is unusual for BC.

Economy and Culture: Kamloops is often billed as the "Tournament Capital of Canada" for its excellent sports facilities. Its economy is diversified, spanning transportation (it is a major rail and highway junction, including the Trans-Canada Highway), retail, healthcare, education (Thompson Rivers University), and tourism.

Activities: It is an outdoor enthusiast's haven, offering white-water rafting on the Thompson River, hiking, world-class mountain biking, and easy access to many lakes and the nearby Sun Peaks ski resort.

Sunset at Riverside in Kamloops

We were fortunate enough to see this beautiful sunset a couple of days ago right out of our balcony. It was quite magnificent.

"I had a dream of music and art and the big city in which I would get lost, where no one would know me and I wouldn't know anyone, where I would work at some ordinary job, and if one day I got up in the morning and decided I wasn't going to go to work anymore, no one would ask questions."

From my travels.. So good to be on vacation!!!

Saw the sun for the first time since Christmas yesterday!! Beautiful!

Roster shot of CP GP38AC #3019 still probably wearing the Pac-Man logo from the CP Rail era. 3019 is seen idling away at the Kamloops yard waiting for it's next assignment.

So after chasing this train for 22 hours over 2 days on its run through the Okanagan, it ended here for me a couple miles south of CN's Kamloops yard. Although I'm disappointed I missed the Kelowna Pacific era, it is still a very interesting branchline to check out.

It was a great pity there was no place to stop and take pictures when we finally arrived to Kamloops after 8 hours of driving from Vancouver because the sunset colors were painting all surrounding hills with lilac hues. It was simply beautiful. I have managed this one shot from our moving vehicle, which is quite an accomplishment considering I was siting in the front passenger seat and this was shot through back window on driver side ;D

CN 2542 has just come off the South Thompson River bridge and is passing the Rocky Mountaineer station (left), CP interchange yard (center) and the Kamloops Heritage Railway yard (right) as the Okanagan switcher makes it's way to CP's Shuswap Sub and eventually home rails again at Campbell Creek.
