London, UK – Tuesday 26 August 2014:
Youth and community development charity Active Communities Network joined forces with retailer, Asda and their charitable arm - the Asda Foundation - to launch a partnership aimed at improving the employability of young people across Tower Hamlets.
Part of a wider pan-London, three-year programme, the Tower Hamlets partnership will see Asda ‘Community Life Champions’ and colleagues from local stores mentor young people, shadow them during intensive sport and youth work programmes and offer them work placement opportunities and training including the bespoke Open College Network (OCN) ‘Skills for Employment and Enterprise’ accreditation.
The partnership targets some of the area’s most ‘at risk’ young people, delivering clear progression pathways into citizenship and volunteering with those involved supported with access to work placements, help with writing CVs and gaining interview practice.
Despite consistent heavy rain throughout the day, over 120 young people aged 12-16 years old and local volunteers attended the launch at Mile End Stadium alongside a special visit from local MP Jim Fitzpatrick.
The free event started at 10am and included boxing, football, handball, long-jump and a ‘keepy-up’ football competition.
The events was supported by Hornstars SC, Poplar Harca, Centre Spot Events, Tower Hamlets Council, Spotlight, Milestone, Mile End Community Project, Rio Ferdinand Foundation, London GD Handball Club, and Fight 4 Change.
The event finished with medal presentations at 3pm.

University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto joined the president of the UK Student Development Council, Jonathon Nunley, Kentucky Historical Society Marker Program Coordinator Becky Riddle and others April 15 in dedicating the latest addition to the Live Blue Legacy historical marker program. The marker is made possible through donations from members of the Class of 2012.
This historical highway marker, the 19th in a series, pays tribute to UK student traditions dating back more than 100 years.
An early rivalry between freshman and sophomore classes on the UK campuses was the annual 'Flag Rush' competition where one class would defend their flag from being captured by a rush of competitors.
Replacing the flag rush in 1913 was the 'Tug of War' across Clifton Pond. Students were granted a half-holiday for the annual drenching, and crowds could reach more than 2,000 for the event.
The dedication ceremony and unveiling of the marker took place at a site located near the William T. Young Library on the UK campus. A reception followed.
Since 1994, the Live Blue Legacy Program has supported the placement of Kentucky Historical Society Highway Markers across the UK campus. The Live Blue Legacy Program is administered by the Student Development Council, whose members solicit gifts from members of the graduating class, in this case the Class of 2012. These funds are used to purchase, install and dedicate a marker in the name of that particular class.

Was wondering by a construction site while they were driving some huge pilings into the ground. This guy was using a Ark-welder to do the final joins on the pilings. He didn't object to having a photo or two taken. The site super actually found it rather amusing, as did the Pile-Driver operator.

CAMP ARIFJAN — Hundreds of Soldiers and civilians joined the 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), an Army Reserve Command based out of Orlando, Fl., and the 3rd Medical Command (Deployment Support) out of Forest Park, Ga., for the U.S. Army Reserve’s (USAR) 106th birthday five kilometer run Apr. 23 here.
Today, more than 19,000 Army Reservists serve in direct support of Army Service Component Commands and Combatant Commands across the globe; include nearly 4,000 Soldiers in Afghanistan and more than 1,000 Soldiers stationed in Kuwait.
The U.S. Army Reserve traces its beginnings to April 23, 1908, when Congress passed Senate Bill 1424. This act authorized the Army to establish a reserve corps of medical officers. The Secretary of War could order these officers to active duty during time of emergency. This was the nation's first Federal Reserve. Four years later, a provision of the Army Appropriations Act of 1912 created the Regular Army Reserve, a Federal Reserve outside the Medical Reserve Corps authorized in 1908.
The first call-up of the Army Reserve came in 1916 as a result of tensions between the United States and Mexico caused by the Mexican bandit, Francisco "Pancho" Villa, and the subsequent punitive expedition after Villa led by Brig. Gen. John J. Pershing. For a time, it looked like there might be a war between Mexico and the United States and for the first, but not the only time, the Army looked to its citizen-soldiers for added strength and expertise.
The celebration will continue tonight at a mass re-enlistment & awards ceremony, followed by a USAR video presentation and cake cutting event. The 143d ESC is scheduled to re-deploy after serving more than 8 months overseas, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
