There were so many emerging dragonflies on the shore that I couldn't follow it all. Amazing. Most likely a cobra clubtail.

Bundi is, for some reason that eludes me, not very high up on the list of places to visit for most travelers. With its beautiful blue houses, small alleyways and very friendly people it was easily the highlight of my time in Rajasthan. Also, you can get the best chai in all of India. Look out for Krishnas Place should you ever come here.

After months of admiring everyone else's lovely Treeson pictures and

hunting them down.. I managed to find the Treeson and Other Stories

series 1 figurines....sooo cute!

And I got a Ren too (well, now I have two of them!)

I'm still looking for any other Treesons.. but they're so hard to find

(at a reasonable price, I mean). I guess I discovered these cute

little fellows a bit too late.. but better late than never! :)

Thousands of university, college and school students – joined by workers – are marching in London and Manchester against Tory cuts to education, fee rises and attacks on jobs and services.

The revolution in Tunisia and uprising in Egypt have clearly inspired the marches. Marchers have chanted, “Egypt, Egypt everywhere.”

London

Aisha, an FE student from Camden in north London said, “I’ve been on all the demonstrations, but some of my friends are here who haven’t been out on the protests before.

“I like the slogan ‘This is only the beginning’, because it’s going to be a long fight against this government.”

Theo, a school student from south east London, took part in the Day X walkouts last year. He said, “Lots of people who want to go to university won’t be able to and people will definitely be affected by the cuts to EMA [Education Maintenance Allowance]. The government is making the wrong people pay – the bankers are getting hundreds of thousands in bonuses.”

For workers, the student protests have been an inspiration.

A GMB rep joining the protest in London said, “I’m here to show solidarity with the students. I’ve got a daughter who has just gone through university and there is no way she would have been able to afford £9,000 a year fees.

“I’m also here to say that I don’t believe in these cuts. We’ve got to stick together workers and students. I think that the TUC demo on the 26 March can give people confidence to fight.”

UCU lecturer Vicky Margree works at the University of Brighton. She said, “We face 100 percent cut in arts and humanities funding which will hit universities hard. And the new fees will make university unaffordable for the majority of people.”

Kelly Rogers, a Unison organiser, said, “Unless we show solidarity with younger people we may as well give up. Students have led the way and enthused workers, showing us how to fight.”

Solidarity with the Egyptian uprising

In London the mood was electric as up to a thousand students joined the many hundreds of people already protesting in solidarity with the Egyptian people outside the embassy off Park Lane.

Chants of “Solidarity, solidarity,” “London and Cairo unite and fight” and “Hey ho Mubarak has to go” are ringing through the air.

One man on the original protest said, “I can’t believe that all these young people have come to support us. This makes us feel even stronger. I can’t wait to send the pictures of all you British people who have come to support us to people back home.”

Before reaching the embassy, the protest stopped outside the Tory HQ at Millbank – a focus of student anger and protests last year – as students chanted, “Tory scum, here we come.”

Joining the roster of fantastic Miss Universe titleholders who graced the Puteri Indonesia contest is no other than the current winner – Demi Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa. And when it comes to wearing the traditional costume of Indonesia which is called the kebaya, Demi Leigh was just sizzling hot. She’s got a lot of class and poise walking onstage while wearing the gold and blue traditional dress. What was even more fantastic is how the Mikomoto pearl crown of Miss Universe completed the design of her dress.

Putri Indonesia 2018, the 22nd Puteri Indonesia pageant, was held at March 9, 2018. Bunga Jelitha, Puteri Indonesia 2017 of Jakarta Special Region 5 crowned her successor, Sonia Fergina from Bangka Belitung, at the end of the event. She defeated 38 other candidates to win the title of Miss Universe Indonesia 2018 and will now represent Indonesia at the Miss Universe 2018. The runners-up, Vania Herlambang from Banten and Wilda Situngkir from West Kalimantan will go to Miss International 2018 and Miss Supranational 2018 respectively. The finale was graced by Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa, Miss International 2017 Kevin Lilliana of Indonesia and Miss Supranational 2017 Jenny Kim of South Korea.

Championing, volunteering and community spirit was on the menu when The Big Lunch and Volunteer Now joined local community organisations across County Antrim at The Braid in Ballymena for lunch this week.

Speaking at the event, Wendy Osborne OBE, Chief Executive, Volunteer Now said; “Volunteer Now is delighted to support The Big Lunch as part of Volunteers’ Week 1 – 7 June. Volunteers Week is about celebrating and thanking the many thousands of volunteers who are local heroes in our communities.

“Hundreds of volunteer involving organisations, from grass roots community groups to large charities take part in the Week to raise the profile of their volunteers and the valuable work they do by hosting presentations, celebrations and by simply getting together to celebrate volunteering.

“Having a Big Lunch is one way neighbours and local communities can come together through a simple act of community, friendship and fun and events like these can help encourage more volunteering in your area and even start good local conversations about Time Banking. Volunteer involving organisations can order free resources to help their celebrations at www.volunteernow.co.uk.”

Deputy Mayor of Ballymena, Robin Cherry MBE, said; “I am very impressed by the enthusiasm of both Volunteer Now and The Big Lunch.

“We at Ballymena Borough Council regard community as a priority, and I personally believe volunteers are the salt of the earth. I would seriously encourage all those within the borough to get involved in the Big Lunch and get to know your neighbour.”

The Big Lunch is an initiative led by the Eden Project, funded by BIG Lottery Fund and supported by Mastercard, Kingsmill and ASDA. It can be anything from a few neighbours getting together in the garden or on the street, to a full-blown street party with food, music and decoration that quite literally stops the traffic.

The Big Lunch representative in Northern Ireland, Grainne McCloskey said; “We are encouraging people across the UK to get together in their local area and celebrate their community or use the event to raise money for a charity of their choice. It’s happening on Sunday 3 June during the 28th annual Volunteers’ Week (1 – 7 June) so why not get a free pack from our website, www.thebiglunch.com and organise your own get together.

Speaking at the roadshow Joanne McDowell, Big Lottery Fund NI Director, said; "The Big Lunch is firmly establishing itself in Northern Ireland as a great way for communities and neighbourhoods to come together in the simple act of sharing a meal.

“The Big Lottery Fund is encouraging charities, volunteer organisations and community groups across Northern Ireland to run Big Lunches in their communities that will bring local people together. The good conversations started at Big Lunches can lead to stronger neighbourhood networks and motivate people to take more of an active role in their communities

Big Jubilee Lunches are also taking place as part of the celebrations to mark

the Diamond Jubilee in 2012 over the long weekend 2nd – 5th June.

Why don't we all change our icons for a while

using this black ribbon instead.

It is a way for us to say:

stop the killing of civilians.

Stop this war. Stop this slaughter.

Can you do this?

It's simple: save this image, upload it in your photostream,

and then change your icon.

And also, use the last lines of this description (the bold phrase)

as your uploaded image tag.

Craftivism: Making a Difference in the World~ One Stitch at a Time

KnitLit group, spring 2011 Haverstraw Middle School, Haverstraw, NY

People are doing it. They are doing it on subways, in restaurants and on airplanes. They are doing it in baseball stadiums, movie theaters and in the park. They are doing Craftivism and everywhere you turn you can find people of all ages, races, creeds and religions participating in what has become a global phenomenon of making the world a better place- one stitch at a time.

The term “craftivism”, hybrid of the words craft + activism, was coined in 2003 by creator and knitter, Betsy Greer. It is a movement based upon the idea that a person’s time and talent can really make a difference in the world. Most craftivists are knitters and crocheters looking to find different and more meaningful ways to share their craft and it is being used to bring attention to a multitude of causes. Craftivists help to bring about positive change in the world through their skills.

Some of the causes targeted in the craftivism movement are environmentalism, anti-capitalism, anti-sweatshop, anti-war a well as various personal causes such as breast cancer awareness, literacy, homelessness, domestic violence and children born into poverty. Knitters and crocheters around the world participate in covert “yarn-bombing” escapades, mimicking graffiti street art only with hand knitted fabrics sewn around trees, light poles and statues using their art to beautify the things around them.

It is here that I introduce you to New Yorker Betsy Rodman, a fellow knitter and craftivist. Betsy is the founder of Project Scarf. Project Scarf is bringing knitters from all over the world to join in creating the world’s longest scarf. Separate sections of knitted scarves are sent in to and assembled by Betsy to form a larger scarf. What does one do with the world’s longest scarf, you might ask? When the project is complete, the sections will be disassembled and the individual scarves are distributed to various organizations to provide to help keep warm those who have little.

Betsy also founded the KnitLit program in her local school. This program teaches kids the skill of knitting. Squares are knitted and sewn together to form blankets which are also distributed to those in need. The kids involved in the program choose where to donate. However, this ain’t your grandma's knitting bee- these kids also listen to great books on audio and discuss them as they are knitting. Betsy has had tremendous success in her school and hopes to one day be able to bring KnitLit to schools across the nation. I got to ask Betsy a few questions about herself and her programs.
