Presenter Mariama Kallon speaks at Deseret Book's Time Out for Women at the Salt Palace on Saturday, Nov. 20. She still has the hygiene kit that she received in Africa, where she joined the church
The value of one hygiene kit
When Mariama Kallon was fleeing the rebels in Sierra Leon, she grabbed her scriptures and the plastic bag with her hygiene kit in it.
She still has parts of the kit.
"It blessed the lives of over 25 women in over three weeks," Kallon said of their time in the refugee camp. The women would line up, and she would give them each a pinch of toothpaste. They used the bars of soap sparingly to make them last.
They didn't use the shampoo — it wasn't labeled and they didn't know what it was.
Kallon had lost family members during the war and ended up with friends who were members of the church. For some of the discussions, she walked three miles to the chapel.
She later served a mission at Temple Square. She brought her scriptures, both changes of clothes that she had and the hygiene kit when she entered the MTC.
Later she was reunited with her little sister and nephew when a Lehi, Utah, family brought them to the United States, she said during her at times emotional presentation of her conversion and the promises that were fulfilled to her.
"Heavenly Father loves each and everyone one of his children," Kallon said.
Parenting in the trenches
Author Linda Eyre and her daughter, Shawni Eyre Pothier, gave five tips for helping mothers.
First, be your own best kind of mom.
"We don't always get what we want," Pothier said. Children don't always give a reaction that parents expect or that other children do.
"Be careful about guilt," Eyre warned. "Everyone has different kids and different packages."
Second, have an infrastructure.
The Eyre family had a mission statement that they eventually boiled down to three words: "Broaden and Contribute." Pothier family's mission statement is "Learn, work, serve, respect."
Third, give ownership.
At family meetings, they would write down things they would do, like goals or deciding in advance what to do if confronted with a situation, Pothier said.
"Give them ownership of conflicts," Eyre said. They had a repentance bench. So when two of their children fought, they had to sit on the bench until they figured out what they did wrong, tell their parents, apologize and hug.
Fourth, formalize family traditions.
One of the Eyre's daughters had a summertime birthday and they were usually at Bear Lake, so they would float her birthday cake. And wherever it's been, whether in a monument pool in Washington, D.C., or just cupcakes in the sink, they've floated her cake.
Also, they would have family testimony meetings on Sundays after church, Eyre said.
Fifth, teach them to work.
Teach them specific tasks, Pothier said. Then when they have learned that one, she gives them a certificate saying they are certified and can train others.
It takes three P's: print, patience and persistence.
"It was exhilarating that someone changed the toilet paper roll or a light bulb," Eyre said. "Sometimes you just have to live in chaos."
But don't forget to step back and enjoy the moment.
"Your trenches are customized and expressly for you," Eyre added.
Grace and the Atonement
"What Mormon woman has mediocrity as a goal?" asked Brad Wilcox, an associate professor at BYU, as he explored grace and the Atonement during Time Out for Women.
"Grace isn't a booster engine," Wilcox said. "It's a constant energy source."
Think of it more as a mother paying for piano lessons for her children.
"Mom pays the piano teacher. Mom requires practice," Wilcox said.
The children aren't ever repaying for the lessons with money. Their part is to practice and to learn.
"Jesus doesn't make up the difference; he makes all the difference," Wilcox said. "It's not about filling a gap. It's about filling up."
Keeping your hopes up
Growing up, radio host and author Amanda Dickson's mother would tell her, "Don't get your hopes up; you might be disappointed."
Dickson, who presented despite being ill, has changed that to "get your hopes up and leave them up," and don't worry too much about the worst-case scenario.
Sometimes the worst thing that could happen is the best thing that could happen, she added.
"Roll with the flow," she said. "There is energy in change."
Which is why women like new clothes — it's not necessarily the clothes but the change.
'See good days'
Author Emily Freeman likes to "see good days" and happy endings. She offered a few reminders to help see those kinds of days and endings.
First, change your perspective. Look at Laman and Lemuel versus Nephi, Freeman said. It's about perspective.
Second, lists can be powerful. Her grandmother had a list framed on the wall of the little things that brought joy after Freeman's grandfather died. Ammon listed blessings of a mission during the reunion with his brother and Alma the younger.
Third, have an understanding heart. Don't just jump to conclusions. Sometimes there are other circumstances that may not be obvious.
Fourth, remember special days. When her son received his mission call, they invited family, friends, classmates and teammates over. Their home was packed with people. As Freeman went upstairs to get the camera, she felt impressed to take a picture of the group. He was called to Croatia, where there aren't many missionaries and baptism prospects are few. She wanted him to remember the love and support he felt that day he opened the call. And she had a photo.
Last, determine a reason for that hope.
"Where do we turn? To the high priest of good things to come," she added. "I hope the Lord has an ending that is happy for me."
'How hard can it be?'
For dinner one night, singer/songwriter Hilary Weeks was going to need some rotisserie chicken, which she still needed to buy. While finishing up some of the preparations, the thought came to her that she should leave soon to get it.
So, she got on her coat to leave and thought of a short e-mail she needed to send. She quickly sent it and left only to find someone else taking the last rotisserie chicken at the store.
"When Heavenly Father speaks, I need to obey with exactness," Weeks said of the lessons she learned that day. "Heavenly Father cares about the details of our lives."
Weeks shared several songs, from spiritual ones like "He Is" and "Believe in Who You Are" to her lighthearted laundry and whining songs.
There are so many good things women do in a day, and it's important to remember that, Weeks said.
And remember, too, "how we are appreciated by Heavenly Father," Weeks said.

Paige's week seems nearly complete. On Sunday she has church, sunday school and Awana. On Monday she's in dance class. On Tuesday she goes to preschool. On Wednesday she heads for the water at swim class. On Thursday she has another day of preschool. Her weekend more or less begins on Friday, but most of the neighborhood kids are older than her and still at school. Saturday is the big play day around the block.
For a while now, both last year at preschool, and this year, Paige has been going to preschool with one of her friends, Ally. Ally and Paige actually met when they were both much younger, and the neighborhood had a play group. That's two days a week she see's Ally. Well, now Ally has joined Paige's dance class, which makes it three days per week.
We used to get reports that the bond between Ally and Paige was so strong that they'd not play with other kids at preschool. We even went so far as to be proactive about it this year and tell the preschool teacher up front that they shouldn't be afraid to separate them. You might think the three days a week would really undo it, but as it turns out, I think they're actually getting enough of one another.
The latest reports put them expanding their horizons and mingling with new classmates. Maybe they're getting sick of one another?
i carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart)
i am never without it (anywhere i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done by only me is your doing, my darling)
i fear no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet)
i want no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life which grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

*HUNDREDS JOINS “MOVING PLANET “CLIMATE ACTION IN ROSARIO, CAVITE,
PHILIPPINES
*
Amidst signs of an early morning downpour, around 500 people from all walks
of life still converged in-front of the Municipal Hall of Rosario, Cavite to
join the 2011 Moving Planet climate action.
Municipal and barangay government officials and personnel together with
various schools and civic organizations went to the streets on foot and on
their bikes to show their solidarity to the global call to reduce greenhouse
gas emissions to 350 parts per million (ppm) to mitigate the impacts of
global warming and climate change.
Before reaching La Isla Bonita de Salinas beach where the Moving Planet and
350 human formation will be conducted, the participants walked and bike for
about 2 kilometers carrying paper windmills, 350 banners, and climate
posters while others shouted some chants about climate change.
Upon reaching the beach, a wave of people in different colors signifies that
climate action is everyone’s moral responsibility and concern regardless of
creed, religion and social status.
Michael Giongco, head of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management Office (MDRRMO) of Rosario, in his speech, asserts that everyone
just walked and used their bikes in going to the beach as a manifestation of
the simple action to reduce everyone’s carbon footprint. He added that the
Municipality of Rosario, together with the rest of the world supports the
global call to reduce GhG to 350ppm to mitigate climate change. He also
hopes that the said event will be start of a long term commitment of
everyone to act on climate change.
Mayor Jose Ricrafente, in his solidarity message congratulates the people of
Rosario for the successful Moving Planet event. He said that climate action
also means putting significance in protecting the environment which is of
vital importance to the survival of the people of Rosario. He shared that
the very beach where the Moving Planet and 350 human formation was held is a
living testimony of the commitment of his leadership in environmental
protection. He further shared that the local government unit has poured a
lot of effort to put an end to illegal fishing activities in the coastal
areas of Rosario.
The 2011 Moving Planet was then read by Ms. Janah Araracap, SK Chair of
Barangay Silangan 1. She expressed that climate change is bringing permanent
changes to our lives that the immediate effects that worsen natural hazard
events must be managed with proper preparedness and response. She added that
the more permanent changes require more massive actions, not just from
government, but from all sectors in society; including all of us. The
declaration also appeals to the people of Rosario and the world to change
“lifestyle” as a simple solution to mitigate climate change. Ms. Araracap
mentioned simple actions such as change of consumerist lifestyle, reduction
or zero use of plastics, promote the practice of walking and biking as mode
of transportation, switch off and unplug of electrical devices, and others.
She also highlights that the people of Rosario supports the current
Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) and Climate Change
Adaptation project that is being implemented in Rosario, Cavite that is
spearheaded by the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR)
and funded by the United Methodist Committee On Relief (UMCOR). Finally, the
declaration emphasized on the basic rights of the people to a healthy
environment and free from disasters brought about by climate change.
The finale of the event was the 350 human formation wherein Mark Cervantes
of IIRR gave a quick background on the significance of 350 number in climate
change issue.
The Moving Planet 2011 event in Rosario was participated by the following
organization, schools and individual: Municipal Local Government of Rosario,

Big Oil & Gas is trying to squeeze as many drilling rigs and fracking equipment onto the map of Europe to lock the EU into fossil fuels. But MEPs can choose the side of Local Communities by pushing for a ban on fracking. Indians in Italy join BJP to contribute the growth and development of India. National Secretary, BJP Kisan Morcha and Prabhari Himachal Pradesh Advocate, Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal said though India and Italy are quiet distant from each other but Italy have made its presence felt in the kitchens of India as every modern day indian cooks pasta and enjoys the dish pretty much and Italy resides in the hearts of modern day Indian. In a meeting with the party workers of Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) and people of Indian origin Grewal firstly thanked everyone for inviting him to this historical country. Grewal said that these two ancient civilizations have known, interacted and traded with each other for over 2000 years. Modern day contacts between the two nations were formed through exchanges between the intellectuals from both sides. Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore visited Italy on invitation of Carlo Formichi, a Professor of Sanskrit at the University of Rome. Grewal praised indian community Residing in Italy and said there contribution in the country is huge .Italy is home to second largest community of Indians in Europe after UK. As per the latest Italian official estimates, more than 1, 60000 Indian nationals are resident in Italy. As first generation migrants, majority of them are engaged in economic sectors such as agriculture, dairy farming, leather industry, construction works and in service Industry. In meeting listening to the problems of People Grewal said that he is aware of the problems which NRI's face relating to property disputes in India and other cases and he assured that Bharatiya Janata party operates a NRI wing which deals with such problems faced by NRI's , this wing stays in touch with its members . He further stated that NRI thanas are opened in punjab which has Bharatiya Janata party in power, He urged Indians in Italy and across the world to join Bharatiya Janata party and contribute further in the growth and development of your country. Grewal said that the United Nations also declared June 21 as the World Yoga Day. The decision, taken at the UN General Assembly, is being seen as a proud moment for India. Talking with the media persons after BJP workers meeting here today Grewal stated that our Hon'ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi had urged the world community to celebrate Indian yoga at the international level during his visit to the United Nations in September this year. Grewal told here that India received support of 170 nations and United Nations declare June 21 as the World Yoga Day. He stated that in their speech at the UNGA, Hon'ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi had said, "Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day. Yoga is an invaluable gift of our ancient tradition. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature." He told that around 170 nations supported PM Modi's proposal. In November, European Union President Mr. Herman Van Rompuy told Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi that the 28 member EU supported his idea for a Yoga Day at the UN. Grewal said that about four months ago, Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had appealed to the world community that India's yoga should be celebrated as World Yoga Day. Grewal said that I am happy to inform you that India have received support of 170 nations and the United Nations will declare June 21 as the World Yoga Day". Grewal told that Yoga is the 5000 years old Indian physical, mental and spiritual practice that aims to transform body and mind for good health.
